Hey guys,

I have started saving my money for my next gun.....and molds and dies. Yes, it is new caliber time for me. I want to go 45 Colt!

I am thinking another blackhawk as I really like my 44 mag. So here is what I want.

Blued New Model Blackhawk
Bisley Grip
Blue steel
4.625 " barrel
Non Fluted cylinder
45 Colt

Problem is I can't find this combination in their catalog.

How should I go about this?

Option A:
Buy the 7.5" and send it somewhere to get cut down and recrowed?

Option B:
Order a 4.625 and obtain parts to convert to a Bisley?

Option C-ZZZZ:
????

Thanks guys for the help!

David

I don't have my info here, but check with Lipseys. I know they have it in .44, & I think they had it in .45

Bud's has the one you are looking for except with the regular grip frame. It is my understanding that the grip frames are interchangeable.

This has the fluted cylinders but thanks for the link. I really like the 4 5/8" barrel!

I do not recall Ruger offering a gun like you desire. I may be wrong as I mostly follow the OM stuff. But to get the Bisley grip AND the non-fluted cylinder, you'll have to buy a Bisley model. And I don't recall them being offered in the short barrel like that. Buy the long barreled gun & have it chopped.

I was thinking the 7.5" too. Shoot it for a while as 7.5" while saving money for the chop job. Maybe I'll like it just fine as a 7.5".

Buy the long barreled version, then ask Ruger if they'll rebarrel it to 4-5/8ths. It might be reasonably inexpensive on a new, unfired gun.

I had my SBH Bisley cut to 5".

Replace the front sight with a Weigand with interchangeable blades while you're at it.

I would try Williams Gunshop Auburn,,, In Auburn MI. They are very tight with Lipsey's and Lipseys is where you would find what you want.

If you can live with stainless, get a 5 1/2" bisley 45 colt. They show up regularly enough on gunbroker, many times NIB. http://pics.gunbroker.com/GB/469195000/469195470/pix510082086.jpg

IMHO the 5 1/2" length is perfection in a bisley.

I was going to suggest cutting a 7 1/2 to an even 5" and have yourself a unique looking Bisley.

Also, be sure you check cylinder throats, those roll marked unfluted cylinders generally run the tightest of all .45 Cylinders with throats that pin out at .450" ~ .4505"

A lot of work fitting a new grip frame. If you buy one new from Brownells, it will come as a raw cast piece.

I've heard there is a "medium" frame and a "heavy" frame. I want the heavy frame for ruger only loads.

Are these two on the heavy frame?

David: I seriously recommend trying to find a Bisley instead of "converting" a regular SBH to Bisley. The parts aren't cheap and you'll end up with another $200 in the gun that you can avoid by just buying a Bisley to begin with.

The only "medium frame revolver" that I know of from Ruger is the "Blackhawk Bisley" mine is in .44 Special but they are also available in .357 Mag. This was a special run for Lipsey's as well. Mine has a 4 5/8" bbl. This is as opposed to a "Super Black Hawk Bisley," which was available in .41 Mag, .44 Mag and 45 LC.

Also all S/A style Revolvers with barrels below 5.5" should have the Ejector housing extend all the way to the end of the barrel. I have not done mine yet but I have the Ruger part which is the housing off one of the 10" SBH guns. You just have to cut it to length.

This is a little known point of correctness for S/A Revolvers, and 5" is in between 4 5/8" and 5 1/2" but if John Linebaugh tells you that's the way it should be I tend to listen. www.customsixguns.com Watch the short video on the home page. This guy pretty much invented the "really high power" hand gun, and he uses Ruger Super Blackhawk Bisley's almost exclusively for his conversions.

Here's a pic of both my guns together.

Randy,

thank you for sharing your knowledge. It looks like you already have the gun I'm searching for. I think I will save up for the 7 1/2" to have cut down to the length of the ejector housing.

thanks again to all of you guys
