View Full Version : Garand ejection pattern.

I was under the impression that a Garand with issue ammo tended to eject at about 2 o'clock (if the target is at 12:00 0'clock), with lighter loads moving right, towards 5 o'clock, but several posters have indicated the opposite - that heavier loads move aft. Is this an individual rifle thing, or is there a general rule of thumb? Regards, Bill.

ejection is the product of many things, proper lubrication, parts condition, ammunition specifications, etc....

I have had ammunition in the same string throw brass from 12:00 to 5:00.

With 200 grain lead my puts the first one at 3 o'clock and the rest between 1 and 2 o'clock. Everytime.

is the rifle is in good shape, it should throw brass from just about any kind of load that cycles the action between 1 and 3 oclock. if not, first place to start is the springs, and then start looking into the gas cyl/piston.

I don't have a lot of time with an M-1, but do have years of experience with its little brother the M-14. The first place I would look for ejection problems is the ejector, take it out of the bolt and make sure the spring isn't broken or mangled and also clean the hole in the bolt.

Maybe just go ahead and replace the ejector spring, it is eye-opening how much set that little spring will take.

It's my understanding that it's common for M1's to kinda "spray" brass from 1 to 5 o'clock. All the same ammo from the same clip, just flings 'em wherever.

a good running M1 wont spray brass, it'll put em all right in the same general area.

My experience is that each M1 will eject slightly differently from others with the same load. As mentioned above, spring tension (oprod spring and ejector spring) usually accounts for that, although how tight the extractor fits on the case's rim may also have some influence as well as the bolt velocity due to how tight the piston is in the power chamber. I do like my M1s to eject the same load to about the same place each shot though. That demonstrates consistency in the rifle's mechanism as well as the load being shot. The M1 that I'm playing with now, stacks up its cast boolit's cases at One O'Clock with boring regularity.

My m1 always ejects about 2 o'clock in a rather violent way.

I have 2 garands. The springfield ejects everywhere and the winchester ejects forward but it also ejects the clips straight at my teeth lol
