I need some help with an older Ithaca Model 37 shotgun I have. I bought the gun because it is a 16ga, of a nice weight, and was cheap $200 with probably less than a box through it. The only problem the stock was cut down, most likely for a kid to 13" LOP. That is with the Pachmayr 1" recoil pad, so the stock is actually 12" in length. Which is not fun to shoot and I have hit myself in the nose with my thumb. Hence I bought a LimbSaver Small 1" slip on recoil pad for the gun. Turns out for some reason even the small pad it to large for the stock. So I built up the stock with duct tape to get a better fit. It doesn't look good and the Limbsaver shifts and moves a lot when shooting.

I asked in other forums for advice with people advising me to buy a new stock. This is a great idea in theory but in actuality would cost at least $300 which does not factor in fitting the stock to the gun.

Another suggestion that I like is a leather lace up recoil pad. After looking into it I can not find one that adds an 1" to the stock. Which is the minimum I would want. Anyone know where I might find such a pad?

If not plan B is to add walnut spacers and perhaps put leather pad over them.

Get a Kickeze pad they are about a half inch longer.

FLHTC, for me the $400-$500 cost to restock the gun is just not worth it.

MaLar, I have looked at Kickeze pads but I need one that adds 1" to the LOP.

Look on Boyd`s for a replacement stock for this gun for less than $100. Who ever told you $300 must have been a stock with gold inlays!Robert

you can by plastic buttstock spacers up to an inch thick (probably thicker if you look), add one, grind to fit the stock, then add a good buttpad or your lace up leather thingy. or you can get a chunk of wood and add to the stock. there's a few options to add length to a cut down stock. most arent super pretty though.

They are my own calculation.
$120 for the stock
$150 for the checkering
$100+ for fitting and finish
$30+ for various shipping fees

Equals around $400 or more for a new stock.

I have a kik-eez pad on my HR, it easily adds 1" to LOP. If you need a little more, just cut leather spacers....

If you're able to fit and finish walnut spacers there is no reason you can't install the 'precision fit' or 'grind-to-fit' from Limbsaver. As a rank amateur I did one on an Enfield barreled to 45-70. It turned out perfect and works as advertised.

$64 for a butt stock. All you have to do is order one. http://www.gunstocksinc.com/web_pages/Plate-pics/Ithaca-Stocks/Itaca-stocks.htm

Boyds list a walnut stock for $65. http://www.boydsgunstocks.com/FindAStock?Make=2K&Model=023&Action=19&Shape=15

With Boyds stocks there is no fitting. They fit.

If you want checkering, well, that's your choice and it does come with a price, but using your calculations, we're still at around $200. Or learn to do it yourself for around $50.

Check on ebay for a used one. The model 37 was a popular gun, should be some stocks and parts for sale.

Boyd`s offers checkering on their stocks for a fairly reasonable price. They are ready to install as purchased. Myself, I really never saw a reason for checkering on a shotgun stock in my 50+ years carrying a shotgun in the field.Robert

Measure the butt stock at the back and I have a drawer full of cut off that you might be able to match in otherwise $25.00 and we will add a cut off section and fit a surplus recoil pad to lengthen it out to 14"

What I would do in your case is check out a gun show or gunshop/gunsmith for some old junk stock. Cut off the amount you need from the butt end, glue and screw it to your short stock fitting it like you would a recoil pad. The 37's were pretty much straight grain walnut and should match up fairly well, so if you do a good job it shouldn't look too bad.
