Janoosh, most 40mm chaulk rounds are for Grenade Launchers. Those are registered as Destructive Devices by BATFE same $200 tax as silencer or machine gun, the 37mm are non-DD as no one makes anti-personnel ammo for that caliber.

Artful...Better yet..Thanks
As a NYer, most of this is unavailable to me. So, my interest is peaked.
Saw a launcher for sale in a Del. Gun shop when I was at Punkin Chunkin. Looked like it was converted to 37 from 40 and Russian.

Not talking about a cannon but the shoulder fired launchers as seen below in artfuls post.
Btw, no tax stamp required for non HE rounds and the launchers are "ok" in 37 or 40 mm as long as they are smooth bore.

37mm is like buying a shotgun in most states.

Ammunition

The TBL-37 will handle 37mm ammunition made by any manufacturer. Available ammunition includes flares, smoke and other pyrotechnic rounds for civilian use. If you are a member of law enforcement or the military you can have a variety of “Less Than Lethal” rounds at your disposal. These include Batons, CS Gas, Wildlife Management (Bird Control) and crowd dispersing Rubber Pellets.

Thanks to both of you.
Labradigger, not to hijack your thread, how are the projectiles made???
And are the cases re-loaded the same as regular rounds??
Do the cases have the same chamber inside.??
Once again apologies for the hijack as I find this fascinating.

In the Highlands of Scotland rifle cartridges (I think .22LR) have sometimes been used for locating Cairngorm semi-precious stones embedded in the rock. You could see them gleam when the sun was low, but if you tried to walk to the place, you would never find them. So you deposited a chalk mark nearby.

I have shot chalk and gas rounds out of an M79. Somebody makes or made an insert for the barrel to allow you to shoot the exploding 20 gauge rounds that used
to be available. I shot some of them to and they were a blast. I have not loaded for the 40MM but know people who do.

The cases are made with a blue plastic rn projectile, they are loaded with chalk so you can see where they hit. They are reloaded with 38 spcl blanks filled with gunpowder.
The blue rn projectile can be reused several times.

I have a 37mm smooth bore DefTec gas gun at work. It is not registered as a destructive device as its use is solely for 37mm gas cartridges like OC or CS powder.

But if drop in a less lethal Impact munition like a wood or foam baton/ bean bag/ rubber stingers ( any projectile) then I have to do ATF paperwork to register it to the department.

The blue rn projectile can be reused several times. All the practice rounds I fired in 203's and the couple of M79's on hand were not reuseable. They were a blue plastic "nose" with orange powder inside and the base was a large die cast cup with a steel washer in it. They could really hurt a fella in a direct fire role. All the casings on these were a matt white/opaque clear plastic. The M203 M406 HE rounds , the parachute rounds , the smoke and flashbangs had aluminum cases. Back in the day we would put a good long rag just so in the tube of a 203 or M79 and fire off a practice round and it would sound like ripping thunder going downrange. Was a hoot - especially at night !. Even the anodized blue solid aluminum practice rounds with the MK19 were a pisser. Though they are loaded too hot for use in the 203 or 79.

For 37mm chalk round, I use old plastic 35mm film cans, or 5 hour energy drink bottles filled with chalk line chalk. For the propellant charge, black powder (or black powder substitute).

Loads of fun
35mm film cases filled with chalk or cement dye (powdered stuff)
You need two film case lids one for the top and one for the bottom, some have lips within the lid, trim this lip off.
9gr black powder
not sure about the primers, thinking the cases were modifed for shotgun primers
be safe

Shot plenty of M79/M203/Mk13/M320 GLs over the years. Never reloaded for them however.

Yea, the 5 hour energy drink bottles don't break apart as well as the film cans, plus they tumble in flight. But people at work give the empty ones to me (free is good).
