I should give that a try. I've used my forge for melting brass, so shouldn't have any problems with aluminium. I also have an office chair base that I cut up that is some sort of cast alloy that might be worth trying.

I definitely would NOT recommend using kitchen tongs for lifting out a container of melted metal!!
