.510 caliber rimmed cartridge, anything between 500 special and 500 Linebaugh is A-OK. In a custom rust-blue with color case hardened frame old model vaquero.

I occasionally dream of other firearms. But it's always fleeting:
cz527 in 223. So, 223 Remington.
bearcat or other ruger 22 rimfire revolver 6 shooter. So, 22 rimfire.
S&W M&P 38 special snub without exposed hammer. So, 38 special +p.
Long range rifle. too many cool cartridges in that game to pick one. From designed-for-no-recoil to use-a-brake-cause-it's-going-a-mile-and-it's-not-fun-to-shoot. list toppers would be a 243 win or 6.5 barrel-burner, or a ridiculous over-bore 7mm like a 7mm RUM.

Gotta be honest, I basically own every gun that makes me smile (day in and day out) to think about. But I had to post because the one that's left, being a .510 caliber cast boolit handgun shooter is too cool (imo) not to mention.

Already have the mold for it too:

http://castboolits.gunloads.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=103168&d=1398407460

450 grains, and the fact that it is an incongruous non-WFN makes it all the more cheeky and clever.

Have you fired a .55 Boys rifle? A buddy of mine had one but it had been re chambered to .50 BMG.

No, never fired one but I remember when they were available for sale but could not afford one.

Another even better would be the Lahti L-39 Finnish anti tank rifle "These were chambered for the more commonly available Solothurn 20x138B (aka 20mm Breda) round, ....". The guns and ammo were sold by Interarmco in Alexandria VA, I went to Interarmco when they were still in business couldn't afford much in those days but had fun looking. They were quite a business, some say it was a front for the CIA to supply arms to trouble spots around the world.

Here is a little more history and a link.

Well, some were lost in combat of course, but 1000 perfectly good and fully functional semiautomatics were put on the world surplus market around 1960. 200,000 rounds of ammo went too, just in case big bore plinkers wanted to test fire their new shoulder cannons.

It looks like most of this offering was snapped up by Interarmco’s redoubtable Sam Cummings who soon found lots of willing buyers among America’s military gun collectors and enthusiasts. Potomac Arms in Virginia and Seaport Traders in California were both retail and mail order outlets for Interarmco, offering mint condition Lahti’s with every accessory and tool imaginable for the astonishingly low price of $99.95! Need ammo? How about 100 rounds of AP-T for a mere 85 cents each?

Ok, Way back on page 2, I showed a pic of the mystery cartridge that I was holding. The guesses were a bit on the small size though.

No it's not a 10Ga nor a 700 or even a 600. The 577 T-rex is a whimp!

That is a 4 bore Cartridge. That's a hole in the pipe just over one inch. 120 grains of Blue Dot will roll the round ball out at 1750 fps and 9414 of energy.
16 drams of FG or FFG (440 grns) is a bit less than the Bue Dot.

The cool factor is that these rifles are from the 1870-80's and are still the largest shoulder fired guns around short of a 2 bore punt gun. (Those weren't shoulder fired though)

I wouldn't be so sure, they seem to be in a rut. Most of those I've seen mentioned were a little too far off the beaten path for the mainstream gun buyer. It was hard for me to name three, seems I already have several of the rifles other folks wish for.

After reading thru this thread, it is noticeable that much of the wishful thinking centers around cartridges that are no longer available. Could this be because they didn't sell well when available?

One of my weaknesses is that I seem to covet something when I can't get it anymore.

Here is a little more history and a link.

http://www.smallarmsreview.com/display.article.cfm?idarticles=1230

I probably still have an "American Rifleman" with an article on shooting the Solothurn, somewhere around 1968. The author reported that the recoil, in a semiautomatic, was very powerful but seemed slow, pushing you back rather than hitting you. It was an extremely good 20mm. antitank rifle by the standards of 1936 or so, when the idea was probably conceived. The trouble was that by the time things really started happening, tanks had got extremely better. Not much, in the European war, depended on lighter armoured cars.

I used to know a Kuwaiti air force officer who, post-1990, had an anti-aircraft gun in his garden, and went around saying "Next time..." I don't know the make, but it would have been about 37 or 40mm. He said nobody else seemed to want it, and the bigger ones were too big to tow behind his car, so that would have been wrong.

The cool factor is that these rifles are from the 1870-80's and are still the largest shoulder fired guns around short of a 2 bore punt gun. (Those weren't shoulder fired though)

http://youtu.be/ly140tZ4-rU

A few custom gunmakers have produced 2 bore shoulder guns recently, although it would be hard to see a logical reason until somebody invents a bigger elephant. Or if the owner has a preoccupation with the size of something completely different. Punt guns were larger still, up to around 2in. bore, but they weren't shoulder fired. They were supported either by a spring trunnion device or breeching ropes around the stem of the punt. The nearest some came to the shoulder was a sort of hinged wooden spade under the shooter's chest.

Back in the muzzle-loading days, when one shot was all you were liable to get, the 2 bore for African game had some point. But Sir Samuel Baker, the only person I heard of using one for practical reasons, heartily regretted it and said he never shot as well with anything after using them.

A four bore, by contrast, was fairly manageable if it had the weight of a heavy double. When something monstrous is coming at you, recoil ceases to preoccupy you. They were largely supplanted, though, by double 8 bores, both rifled and smoothbore. Some of the early ones were also very heavy, but they came down enough in weight, with moderate loads, to be quite comfortable to shoot, and even the smoothbores gave groups that would be considered good with modern shotgun slugs.

So number one in my choice would be an 8 bore hammer rifle, chambered for the brass cases. The greatest strength is produced with back action locks and the rotary underlever locking system.

Second is one so rare I have never even seen detailed dimensions. There was a .30/.310 round, and the measurement of some Cadet cases I have suggests that it was simply a .308 inside lubed or jacketed bullet loaded into that case, for an appropriate bored barrel. It is also on the British government's list of freely ownable antiques, if it was made up to 1939, which I am sure they all were... if there actually ever were any. I enjoy telling the police "No, I don't need a licence to acquire it. I already have it. I just want a licence, on account of being law-abiding, to shoot it. N0, I don't need a licence to buy cartridges..." They are pretty used to that from me, but it sharpens them up and improves the breed.

Third is nothing very out of the ordinary. Just a .303 sporting rifle built on the early Long Lee-Enfield rifle which never had a charger guide, to the standard early twentieth century British gunmakers made them. Or a barrel blank and derelict action to make my own.

50 BMG in a Barrett semi auto...with plenty of ammo, magazines, components, and a complete reloading outfit.

327 magnums...with a MARLIN 24 inch Cowboy rifle, a pair of S&W model 16s, and a pair of RUGER Blackhawks.

10 mm...replacements for the 5 inch S&W 610s I traded off and a pair of S&W 1006 autos.

I think I have done this before but it would certainly be the ..38/40 and the .32/20
Those are the two that I had in the past that I am longing for..

Maybe a .338 Lapua for a long range rifle .

Two different worlds..but I would love to have guns in those calibers..
I will probably settle for a nice 6.5 for long range work..
I am very interested in long range target shooting.
The old Sharps as well as modern day cartridges.
It is a fascinating art..
I would never bet against the Sharps..

Well, I got my .50 BMG barrel the other day, so I'm one step closer to a wildcat based on that cartridge. The barrel is not tapered and 1.625" in diameter, so it weighs enough that one could argue that it is closer to artillery than a "rifle". :)

I have or had just about anything I've wanted so the ones on my "to do" list are 338-06(being made) .460 maybe .500 in a lever action, 450 Alaskan built on a M71 action.

I would love a 50bmg but can reload 338 lapua for half the price and not give up much for range or stopping power.

I would love a 50bmg but can reload 338 lapua for half the price and not give up much for range or stopping power.

My .50 BMG barrel is going to have the first 3" rechambered in 12-gauge and then the cast bullet will be shoved into the chamber touching the lands separately. I'm thinking I can reload it for pretty cheap.

Using the Lee 450 gr mold, I'm looking at $1.29 per 20 rounds.
Using WC860, I'm looking at $56 / 8 lbs. Figuring somewhere around 200 gr per cartridge, that would work out to be $0.20 per round or $4 per 20 rounds.

Using shotgun primers instead of arsenal primers, I am looking at $0.03 each or $0.60 per 20. I might end up having to make it a duplex load by putting a couple of grains of a fast powder right above the primer in order to get the WC860 to start burning acceptably.

That makes it $5.89 per 20 rounds so far.

Not sure if the plastic shells can be reloaded after being shot at this pressure, so assuming that they can't, that would mean I would have to factor in the cost of the shells at $6/100 or $0.06 each or another $1.20 per 20.

That would bring it up to $7.09 per 20.

That's pretty cheap considering what the guys that shoot the actual .50 BMG end up paying, I think...

6.5 WSM
348 Winchester...yes the 348
375 Cheytac

I have just about everything else covered from 17 to 50

338 Lapua may use half the powder but it doesn't use powder that costs $50 for 8 pounders like the 50bmg does. Even if you were strictly on factory ammo 50BMG is cheaper to shoot at about $2.70 a shot compared to 338 Lapua at $5.00 a shot (local prices)......I looked into it more after I bought a 338 Lapua and realized 50bmg was less expensive.

.32-20, preferably in a 1892 Winchester take down carbine and a Colt Police Positive (special?).
I ran across a .32-20 Colt like that years ago at a very very reasonable price. The exterior was in excellent condition, nearly NIB, but unfortunately when I examined the bore there was a huge gaping pit in the middle of an otherwise excellent bore.

Second would be a 40-80 Bottleneck. One of these held a record for smallest group at 1,000 yards that lasted till the 1960's when broken by a .25-06. Prefered rifle would be a Borchart.

Third would be a .50-95 Express, but only if I could obtain a Colt pump action Express rifle in that chambering. I always felt that would have been the perfect rifle for the Lord Roxton character in "the Lost World". Probably good medicine for large predators, even in packs.

There have been replicas made of the smaller Colt short rifle and "Baby" pump action carbine in .44-40, 38-40, etc.

3)Smith 4" 357
I have a lot of guns not a lot of big bores.
I used to be in the ultra fast overbore guns and semi auto brass throwers.
Now I am all about huge lead flying slow and wheel guns so I do not have to chase brass!
Bolts are disappearing and levers are apearing. Brass throwers are moving further back in the safe and the couple wheel guns I have are always front row.
Scopes are also turning into peep sights!

I have or have had, most anything I wanted in big bores 416, 458, 458 Lott, 450 Watts, 460 Wby, 470 Nitro, but have never even shot a 505 Gibbs, so I guess that would be at the top of the list. (at least until after the first shot)

There are some "oldies" that would be cool. A double barrel flintlock rifle to match the one Tim Murphy shot killing the British general at Saratoga.

An mint original 1886 Win in 45-70 or similar.
