View Full Version : M855 projectiles sources for re-manufactured rounds?

Hi all

With the panic buying now happening on green tips, I wanted to try to ease the situation a bit. But I need help to do it.

I met a local ammo re-manufacturer here in the Austin area recently. He's got his FFL for making ammo etc. He's already operating at capacity though.

I on the other hand am sitting on a boatload of Lake City 5.56 brass - about 40,000 or a bit more. And I'm currently unemployed which means I have a TON of time available to me every day, even while I am doing the job hunt thing.

If we can find a big enough source for the projectiles at reasonable bulk prices, we can get at least 40,000 rounds to help out the shooting community. It's a win all around, without any stupid/gouging pricing involved.

For sources I only found this one:
http://www.surplusammo.com/223-caliber-224-bullets-lake-city-m855-62gr-fmj-bt-new-1000-count/

Know of any others? I specifically want green tip if possible, and if it's not it still must be M855 just not painted, as the description for the item linked above calls out.

I just bought 1k of ss109/m855 (non-painted) from americanreloading.com

Thanks for that. Unfortunately, that's even more expensive than Surplus Ammo is at $299 for 1000. Any other sources guys?

we used to buy from a fella at knob creek he pulled down ammo from the military he bought it legally but had to disassemble it then he could sell the components we used to buy 25,000 m855/m193 exedra for a little under .04 cents a pcs we used to get 40 lb kegs of powder for under 300.00 but the last 2 years he can't get any thing out of the government the feds have decided its better to scrap it and burn the powder now a days

Unfortunately, the recent events have turned what were 10 cent bullets a week ago into 30 cent bullets today. I don't think you are going to find any that are still reasonably priced.

Wow talk about gouging, those were under $100/1k a few weeks ago...

Wish I had seen this sooner. I just sold 30,000 for $0.118 apiece. Will be using the funds to buy better bullets.

I have 1K of pull down bullets from GIbrass. Bought these over a decade ago. Someday I may even see a need to load them.

Probably not much help, but I contacted mcci on gunbrokers regarding the 1000x new LC SS109 + once-fired brass combos. Said they still have "plenty" and if you won an auction (they're all going for the $250-shipped starting bids) you could buy as many batches as you want at the same price.

I don't know if they'd be interested in just selling the bullets, and I understand the brass isn't needed, but even with the brass, the price is cheaper than others are selling just the bullets. Still expensive though.

You say your friend is running at capacity. He is going to let you make and sell ammo under his FFL? Also, what happens if for whatever reason, you order 40K bullets at current inflated prices, and something doesn't go as hoped and they don't all get assembled and sold before the ban takes effect?

Maybe you already considered all of this. Best wishes, for whatever you decide...

Why do people want m855 so bad? I could understand the demand if/when it was the least expensive ammo that is reliable. It seems it would be better to just shoot something more affordable in it's place, rather than pay big bucks for the m855.

I only buy 12 ga and 22lr, though. If I buy bullets, they are Hornady 55 fmjbt/c, and I also have thousands of bullets to use up that my grandfather bought (probably 2nds or bulk from a few decades ago).

M855 sucks, but people want what they cant have.

M855 sucks, but people want what they cant have. Out of a sixteen inch barrel, yes, it does. Out of a twenty inch barrel, which is what it was designed for, it performs pretty well.

That said, if I were loading up a bunch of ammo for sale commercially, I'd be looking for Privi Partisan's 77 grainers in bulk. About the least expensive well made heavy .223 bullet I know of. Hard to find though.

Guys: if you can find Hornady 55 gr FMJ's or SP's in the 6000 round bulk boxes they were dumping a few months ago. I believe Midway was selling them last week for $499. I paid$471.68 for a box of them with free shipping from Mid South and that was .07 each. The last pulls I bought were .09 each.

Yes Idiot Boy and his crowd of Eco Nazi's put out a statement that they were banning M855 ammo as armor piercing,,, (which it kind of is?) and now everyone is running around hoarding the stuff.

Maybe that will take their attention off .22LR.

Did you ever think that maybe they wanted to create shortages and raise prices so normal people can't afford it?

Problem you can't hardly get the message out to all of the people fast enough to ruin their plan.

I bought 500 from Widner's last Thursday for $60/500. Was told when I picked them up that they had Millions of them.

$60 for 500 is the same price as 1000 packs of Speer 55gr SP. Would make it a hard sale to me as the Speer is pretty good as a hunting bullet.

I have some pickup truck wheel rims sitting on my berm at our farm. Any bullet I've shot into one from an AR has punched a 22 caliber hole right through. They are pretty thick rims from a one ton truck. That said. A 223 is just a toy compared to my 270 Win and 30-06. Maybe if you had depleted uranium bullets in the 223 you'd do something. Still couldn't send those rims flying like beer cans as the big rifles do.

For hunting coyotes I like the Sierra Game Kings. SBT in 55 or 65 grain weights. The 65's shoot over the same powder charge as my 69 SMK's. Same ballistic chart as it's within an inch to 400 yards. Still working through 7,000 Hornady bulk bullets I bought when Bush was in. At 5 cents each. Got lucky as this batch shoots good. Ones I bought in the red boxes back in the 70's were 2 1/2 MOA bullets. My cast bullets shoot sub MOA from my 222 rem bolt gun. I'll leave the fodder bullets to the kids still trying to hit a pie plate at fifty yards. Then doing a couple mag dumps. It's all good fun for them. I've even looked at one of those $100 barrels with thoughts of a silly gun blaster.

Obama is just pulling this stunt with ammo to get love from his base. Hillary can resend it after she's elected.

I use the cheap ammo for blasting when my nephews visit. We play a game with bounce targets. 1 point for each ground hit, 3 points of you can hit it midair. Your turn ends on the first miss. Go 10 turns each to see who gets high score. The 55 grain seconds work well for that.

For coyotes I like a 55 grain V-max over CFE223

Performs well is subjective to the user. I've fired many of the M855 out of M4 Carbines and M16A4 rifles in service, and ninja guns in the civilian world. In the service, I found it to a poor rd for barrier penetration that was often deflected by sheet metal, glass, and other things you would think it would go through. On the KD range, you can see the load variations in the pits and on target when shooting. It does great for 2-3 MOA out of our unturned service rifles and will hold moa + out of most off the rack AR's I've had experience with.

I prefer 55gr FMJ and Berger 77 gr OTM for my needs.

That's just my opinion. I find neither the bullet or the loaded ammo worth my money when I get to choose what I shoot. Other's experience will vary and it is what it is. All I know is they are a hot seller and as long as I can keep getting them then I will keep selling them.

Gee, the last can of M855 I bought was less than forty cents a round for the loaded round.

They must read this site. Page is cleaned up and ss 109's are gone. Just white blanks where they cut adds out with plastic scissors.

No one I know of. But they are $120 for a thousand or the same price as SS109's when sold at $60 for 500. Speer bulk packs are 1,000 packs. I see Powder Valley has them for $123.51. That's up a little from the last time I looked. They have Hornady .224 55 GR SP W/C (2000) count for $180 or 9 cents each. 55 fmj-bt are the same price.

Sorry about a slow reply here guys, been super busy.

@kencha
Yeah, thought about the ban becoming an issue of course. But at the speed the M855 is flying out the door, it wouldn't matter for the quantity I have on hand.

@257
Which gun shows did you find them at?

Any bulk availability anywhere else?
