I've just got a pair of (used) Uberti 1875 revolvers. The springs and bits associated with the "floating" firing pin have been removed on one of them. It still shoots fine, but it got me curious about the mechanism. I'm assuming it's supposed to be some sort of safety thingy.

Can anyone enlighten me about it?

Much later in the day........
I've answered my own question. Yes, it's a safety device to allow for carrying all six chambers loaded. Quite a neat design, if a little complicated, but seeing that we only load five chambers where I shoot it's completely irrelevant as far as I'm concerned.
