Since there are several threads concerning super slow burners--WC-860 & WC-872--I thought I might inquire about the 5010 Pull Down powder...

Would it be slower than the 860 & 872?...

I wonder what data could be used with it as starting loads? The plastic gallon jug it is in says use H-5010 data. I sure can't find any info on that powder...

Just fill the case to the bottom of the boolit?...

Thanks...BCB

There is "some" info here:

http://www.gibrass.com/gunpowder.html

and here: http://www.ammoland.com/2010/12/smokeless-gun-powder-pallet-sale/#axzz3S1XfvRy5

I have some 5020 labeled "Thunderbird" that I experimented with, but it is a ball powder, and EXTREMELY slow burning. It appears that 5010 is extruded.

IMR5010 Original application is .50 Cal. BMG ammo. Same powder as originally sold
by Hodgdon as H5010, and similar to their current 50BMG. Very slow burning
that can be used in most of the bigger magnum calibers.
This is pulldown extruded powder from Lake City.
$64/8# jug.

This is the info on the gibrass site

Many years ago Buckshot said that those powders mentioned had the burn speed of wet paper bags.

Well, I just filled a 7-30 Waters case, with 5010-PD, to where the base of the boolit would be seated. That was 38.5 grains…

So I thought, why not start with 90% of that charge—or ~35.0 grains…

Used a CCI-350 primer, a 287346 boolit, and a heavy crimp…

Walked up behind my house and put the T/C in front of a tree that was between me and the handgun!!!...

Dropped the hammer and not a problem…

Actually, the bore was clean, but I expected there to be much unburnt powder…

No signs of pressure at all with the case. Took it back to my reloading room and sized it without even using lube…

QuickLoad predicted that only 29.6% of the powder would be burnt. Maybe, but I didn’t see any of those 5010 logs laying anywhere on the white snow…

QuickLoad also predicted that load would have a 6% ballistic efficiency. I don’t think that sounds too good!!!...

It also predicted a velocity of 1112 fps—this I will verify when I can get to my Cabin-in-the-Woods where I have a chrony. Might be interesting…

I bought this powder in 2002 and with shipping (we ordered 48 pounds of assorted powder from Bartlett so we had no hazmet fee) it comes out to $4.17/pound—not bad by today’s standards…

I had only used a bit of it in my 270’s with cast and it was mediocre as far as accuracy was concerned. A full case, ~59 grains, with the 280642 produced 2375 fps from a 22” barrel. Although, I never really got good accuracy with this Model 700 at velocities much over 1800 fps—at that velocity it was a 1.25” shooter at 100 yards for 5 rounds. But, that’s another story…

"Wet paper bags might be accurate"!!!

Good-luck…BCB

Years ago I tried a jug or two of IMR 5010, mostly because it was inexpensive ($24/8lb. + Hazmat unless you ordered 4 jugs). Was it slow? Yes. Dirty? Yes. Could it be used in .30cal. bottle necked cartridges, e.g. .30-06, 7.5 x 55mm, 8 x 57mm? Yes, but with heavier CBs. Could its performance be improved? You bet!

Here's what I did: 1st, you need LR Magnum primers. 2nd, I used 48 grains IMR 5010 in the aforementioned cartridges + either powder bran or spherical shot buffer, which resulted in a slightly compressed load. The 8 x 57mm required the least filler, 0.3cc via a Lee dipper v. 1.0cc in the .30-06 also via a Lee dipper. In every instance, the amount of unburned powder in the fired cases was dramatically reduced, accuracy was at least VG+, or rather, not negatively affected by the buffer. Unfortunately, there was always quite a bit of unburned powder in the bbl.

Btw, the large, chunky kernels did not flow through my powder measures easily or accurately: You're much better off using a dipper of some kind and a scale with 5010. Hope this helps!

Just got back from my Cabin-in-the-Woods and I fired a few of the 5010-PD loads in the 7-30 Waters…

The center orange part of the target is the size of a dime…

The top group is a load of 5.0 grains of Bullseye (963 fps) and the bottom group is 35.0 grains of 5010-PD (1332 fps)…

Both were with the 287346 boolit and a CCI-200 for the Bullseye and a CCI-250 for the 5010-PD…

The groups were fired at 50 yards. I had been using the Bullseye load for a few months as I just got into this “reduced load” kick on several of my handgun cartridges and the 30-30 and 7-30 with my T/C Contender 14”…

I was surprised at how well the 5010-PD load shot. And, it was not as dirty as I thought it might be—actually, very few unburnt logs in the barrel…

And, I agree with Maven, powder measurers are pretty much worthless with this powder. Lee dippers will probably be better and faster. It will be interesting to see if a dipper-full (whatever one might be close to 35.0 grains) will allow the same accuracy as the weighed charges…

This may not be discovered for a bit of time as Winter seems to want to hit us again today and for several more days to come…

I've been using IMR5010 pulldown powder in my .338 Lapua Mag for quite a few years. It is a pain for metering with the long extruded grains but it seems to be very consistent. I'm using large rifle magnum match primers and about 97gr of powder with the 250gr SMK and finding accuracy to be excellent with a few .4" 5 shot 100yd groups fired. Mostly we shoot further and not for groups though. Velocity is good at 2850-2950 depending on brass and load. It seems to be have a very nice pressure curve as its getting the velocity but my brass lasts a lot longer than when using retumbo or H1000.
As for burn rate the 20mm ball powders are slower. We tried using 5010 in the 20mm solothurn and it is too fast where WC872 is slow enough. Primers were falling out when using 5010 and this has never happened with the slower powders intended for use in the 20mm vulcan. WC 868, WC870, WC872 are all 20mm powders. I've tried a few rounds of the 20mm powder in the 338 Lapua with 300gr bullets but haven't really spent the time to work up the loads.

Hope that helps

I have used it in a 6mm/284 with pretty good success. I do like to use ball powders in that gun, to prevent throat erosion.
