I am shooting the Lee C452-300-RF which is dressing out at 315 grains. With the charge and rifle I am using the velocity is averaging 1,833 FPS. Using the on-line calulators I have found, that puts the muzzle foot pounds of energy at 2,350 FPE.

Against the larger animals in the lower 48, how effective is this combination for short range hunting out to 125 yards?

Thanks

Can't say anything from experience, but that sounds like a good bear load.

That will kill anything on earth. The only limitation is your alloy.

Just to see if there was a difference in gouping (at 25 yards there was no significant difference), I have been casting them out of both recycled range scrap as well as clip-on wheel weights.

You should be fine. I shoot the 45-70 330 gould hp boolit at 1300 fps. Killed a nice little 8 pt (probably 110lbs field dressed) 2 years back. He was 135 yds out and ran about 40 yds and expired. Even at that low velocity, it blew lung chunks out the off side of the deer.

What caliber? Is this a 45-70?

In 2012 I took a Win 94 in 45LC on safari in Africa. I shot an impala, a warthog, and a Gemsbok with it. Only the gemsbok went more than a step before dropping dead. He went 60 yards and piled up. I was shooting a 250 grain Keith SWC at 1450 FPS. It went should to shoulder on the gemsbok but didn't exit. It broke the onside shoulder and was found under the hide on the offside. The only reason I went with this lighter boolit instead of the 300 grainer is because I was getting better accuracy with it out of my rifle. Using the 300 grainer, you will have absolutely ZERO problems with anything walking the earth in North America if you can place your shots correctly. I intend to use the 300 grainer as my main hunting boolit in my 45/70's.

That sounds similar to the load I use in an inline muzzle loader. It works. The only variable is how far out you can place the bullet well.

That is the same bullet that I use in my pistol except mine only goes about 1100 fps. I shot a 160 lb field dressed 12 point whitetail deer this past season at 55 yds. He went a couple steps, turned around to look then dropped his head to the ground for his final death kick. He was dead at the shot, it just took a few seconds for the message to get to the brain. That load will be effective at what ever range you can hit the vitals. It to much meat is destroyed then maybe back off a little. I have shot a doe with a 454 rifle, full power 260 gr JHP with a solid lung shot and had to track it about 200 yds before it died. There was a good blood trail, but it still ran. I shot a small doe at 10 yds with a 357 mag pistol 158gr RF. It stood there for a few seconds until it fell over dead with one to the chest.

In the .45 Colt, I prefer a 255 grain RNFP..........Robin

Sounds awsome, did you do a write up with pictures?

Edited: Found it a lot quicker than I thought I would. Sounds like it was a great trip! Here is the link if anyone else is interested!

A few years back I shot an unusually large (600# live) cow elk with a muzzleloader using a sabot .429 265 gr. SWC at an MV of 1600 fps and a distance of 50 yards. The last image I had of her before smoke filled the air was of her lifted completely off the ground with feet rotating skywards. Your load will do the same.
