I saved an old revolver from getting melted down, it has been ghetto chopped into a snubbie and I would like to return it to its original condition. It as a six digit number on the butt and a different 5 digit number on the inner frame and crane, can anyone here id this gun so I can try to find the correct replacement parts? If so pm me and I'll send you the serial #'s

Pics are necessary too. Older guns didn't have model numbers stamped in the crane

many of us here could easily identify it from a couple of pictures. i do not have the ability to identify it from the serial.
5 shot= j frame
6 shot 38 probably a k frame unless you have something quite old.
if the cylinder seems huge then maybe a model 28.
does it have adjustable rear sight?
blued, stainless or nickle?
we would all like to see it.
:)
and good for you for saving it.

The number on the butt is the actual serial number, and the number inside the crane and frame are simply machining numbers. It was so the crane would properly fit the frame when assembled, since the older guns were pretty much hand fitted. That's why the older S&W revolvers can't have the side plates switched around without some fitting, since they were also hand fitted. This was all before CNC machining allowed for tighter average fit than the older machining methods did.

Hope this helps.

Sorry ,forgot pics...
For whatever reason this computer will no longer allow me to upload photos
it is a six shot 38 spl, six digit serial# no letters ,I am told it is a K frame model 10 from pre WW2..
I promise to post pics some how some way

The original barrel was cut off as well as the ejector rod, this barrel is a replacement, looked to be screwed in with a set of vice grips.

Hi,
Send it to S&W and they will completely rebuild it! All it will cost you is postage to them!

All you need is a new ejector, if the barrel is OK.

S&W will no longer rebuild older 5 screw models because they don't have parts for them
