Elk with paper patch bullet

As this is my first post I'll try to be brief. I own a 1885 Win. traditional hunter in 405win. In 2013 I shot a cow @ 100 yds. using a Montana bullet works 433gr paper patch bullet. Took out a 4" chunk of rib going in, trashed the lungs,shatered the off-side shoulder and stopped under the hide. Bullet expanded to .85" with perfect mushroom. Loaded with 42gr H4895 they average 1750fps. My other cast bullet shooter is a Farmingdale Shiloh .54 percussion sporter. I cast 490gr Sharps ringtail bullets with a NEI mold. Haven't shot an elk with the 54 but I have shot deer. They just fall down !

i was eyeballing a nice c sharp 45-120 in a local shop today and all i could think of was this thread.

i was this close" to putting my hepburn in 405 but went the traditional route 45-90 plan on a hunt this fall. if i find another chopped up p14 enfield or a martini action i'm going to do a 405

Who was it that was quoted with "Use enough gun"? Sounds like you got that lesson down.

Glad I found this posting. I have a cow elk this fall here in Az. and was thinking of using my 43 mauser, pedersoli RB in 40-65 or my 1867 Swede RB in 8 X 58 RD this time. Have taken more than 15 elk with modern guns and the 44 mag Ruger Blackhawk so time for some fun.
Did take my first elk with an H&R 58 cal. muzzle loader.
You could not ask for a more picture perfect mushroom on that boolit.

What did you estimate the range to be on this shot?

I have taken three elk, all with paper patched bullets. One was a really big cow at 100 yards, and I shot all the way through her shoulders with a 45-110 Shiloh Sharps and a 530 grain round nosed bullet pushed by 100 grains of 2f black powder. The other two were taken with a Shiloh 45-70 Sharps using a 511 grain paper patched bullet in front of 70 grains of 2f black powder. The 5x5 bull was at 85 yards, and like the cow, the paper patched bullet passed through both shoulders and exited. The spike was 105 yards and the paper patched 511 grain bullet gave complete pass through as well. The cow and the spike were down within three steps, the 5x5 went about 25 yards.

I've got it sighted in about 4 1/2 " high @ 100 yds. which makes it dead on @ about 200 yds. The cow I shot was @ 100 yds. There were about 30 head so the hardest part was making sure it was a "slick-top". The expansion supprised me alot ! Just tipped her over.
