I've had an opportunity to work with stainless guide gun that the Mrs. gave me for Christmas a good bit now. My particular rifle seems to like almost any propellant at the stiffer levels behind 300gr.RCBS, 405RCBS, 500gr.Lee. Then I wanted an accurate lighter load, using the 340Lee that I had on hand. (I have 3 other 45/70's). Now I had a bit of difficulty. Loads that had proven good in my other rifles just didn't give me the accuracy I desired. Trailboss shot pretty good, but was just TOOslow. Tried an old friend, 5744 for more velocity. accuracy around 2" at 50 yd. Tried varying amounts of Unique, 11 to 15 gr. Same. H4198, Same. Spied a can of SR4759 on the shelf. MAGIC! Groups went to under 1" at 50 yds. Moved to 100 meter target. 2, 5shot groups at this distance averaged 1 5/8". Every rifle is an individual, I suppose. :-D

Have you had the same experience with other rifles using SR4759? I picked up a 8lb can to try but have not gotten around to it.

I use 4759 in several light loads, my 308 loves it at 19.0 gr with 180 gr boolits @ 1900 fps. I hate pouring it so much I bought the RCBS electronic powder dispenser, it can be a real pain in the hieny to get consistent charges otherwise but I've had such good results with it its hard not to use it.

I tried some in .358 win. but settled on a full house load of Varget behind Saeco 245gr. The 4759 was accurate enough in that rifle, I just could get more velocity out of Varget. I only have a pound of it, but the guide gun says I should get an 8 pounder this weekend!

anybody using the surp 4759 from bartlett? appears there's not any left. that stuff meters great. burn rate is right in there with the real 4759.

4759 the last time it was available.

The way powders were starting to disappear, I thought it prudent to lay in a supply.

At one time I thought 24 pounds of WC820 was way too much and it is down to the last jug (that is a LOT of 357 Mag, 357 Max, 44 Mag and 45-70s downrange).

Anyway, one load that the Winchester 1886 likes is WLP, 23.5 Milsurp 4759, 340 grain ACWW with Felix (RCBS 325 PD). Rolling Block shoots that load ok, but I have not searched for a better load with 4759, and that gun loves 5744 load.

One of my 8X57s likes WLP, 18.5 -21.5 Milsurp 4759 and 175 RD boolit does well. 22.5 opens up to a pattern!

This spring will see many more boolits slung downrange by a batch of 4759!

Milsurp is gone and little will be seen in the future I fear.

OEM surplus is likely to be the future for surplus.

Has anyone spoken to any of the Milsurp suppliers and asked them where the see the milsurp powder market in the near future?

softpoint I have 3 45-70 1 loves 5744 and the other two will shoot fairly respectable on anything in the cartridge but are at their best on 4198 so who knows.
Like you said each have a mind of their own.

I grabbed a case when Hi-Tech had it. I use it in the 06, .35 Rem, 38-55 and 45/70.

Great stuff. That came from the old frangible .30/06 loads. MIne still has small pieces of the white marker bands mixed in. IT's withing 20 FPS of the cannister 4759 and that's probably as close as I can load./beagle

..............A few of us had an order going in to Bartlett when he had the very first offering and I bought a jug of SR4759. By the time I got around to doing some reloading with it and comparing with previous data generated with canister SR4759, he was all out when I called about getting more.

What THAT did was to set me up for the arrival of the 'So Called' IMR4198 :-). H4198 is about my favorite cast boolit rifle powder. I use it a LOT! I picked a load for the Trapdoor with a 405gr slug, but substituted a 300 grain boolit and also fired the load in my converted MAS36. So nothing bad happened and next time I used a milder Marlin 95 type load for a 405gr boolit. Over the chrono it was a whole bunch slower then the book data.

I then began experimenting and eventually found out that this stuff they were calling IMR4198 was actually slower then IMR3031 and almost as slow as 4895! Now powder in that burn rate area is always usefull but it's a bit disappointing when you're really wanting 4198. Anyway, Bartlett got more SR4759 so I called and he said it was the same stuff, so I got a case of it.

My lusting after 4198 was satisfied via Graf & Son when they were blowing out Nobel Tubal 2000. I call it T2K for short. It's easily within lot to lot variance of H4198. Load for load we're talking 10 fps or less differences.

4759 is THE powder I can't do without. It is the only one that gives me clean burn, velocity and accuracy in my 45-70 BFR with any weight boolit. I use it in my 7BR and 7R pistols and shot a lot of 40's when I was in IHMSA.
I have a drawer full of powders of every kind but if I had to chose the powders that cover all I shoot they would be;
4759
296
and Varget.

I got some of Bartlett's 4759 a while back, and it is great in my contender hunter barrel with my Gould HPs. Burns clean and consistent. Be nice if he got some more in, I'd break the bank laying in a supply. Won't hold my breath though.

The reason I mentioned the surp 4759 is that I'm hearing results from all over that it is pretty darn good. I introduced it to several single shot shooters, they made a big order and divvied it up. The fellers what did not partake are now trying to talk some of us outta what we got. I'm keeping mine. Among other things it works in several of the single shots (32 Miller for one), slow, plain base boolits out to 200 very well. I know it works good in my 32-40 single shot - about 13 grains and a breached seated 200 grainer. AND it meters better than the real 4759.

Yup it works great!! Meters quite consistent for the short stick powder that it is.

I bought an adequate supply when it was available through him. The last time I ordered from him (surplus jacketed) I thought that I'd lay in a better supply but it is gone. I'll enjoy it while I have it. The glory days of cheap surplus powder are behind us I'm afraid.

4759 is no magic, but it has been one of the finest cast bullet powders for several generations. It comes by that ability honestly. It was designed to be a fast powder with lots of bulk for military use. The military used/uses it for reduced velocity "frangable" ammunition. As such, it has all of the properties we like in a cast bullet powder.
