ok I got a question I use the Hornaday overall length gauge with the horNaday modified cases now I have been thinking wouldn't it be better to use a pre fired case to test my overall length as in wouldn't it be more accurate forehead spacing to get a total overall length for accurate for the specific gun as opposed to using a modified case

The modified case is short, so not to hit the end of the chamber. It also has that big O treading at the end.
I use the heck out of mine, and with 1/4 inch groups at 200 yards, I cant ask for anything better

yeah I know the threads are different but I could simply drill and tap that out I just didn't know if I would get a more accurate reading due to the pre fired case would be formed to the chamber of that specific gun

It would be pretty easy to make your own "modified" case gauges. Just drill and tap the primer pocket, and then make sure your case neck has been expanded enough that your particular bullet is a loose slip fit in the case neck. For some rifles with tight chambers, however, you may also have to turn the case necks too.

I made my own by tapping the primer pocket to 1/4-20 and used a 1/4" ready rod to adjust the bullet depth. About $2 total and easy to make as many different cases as you want.

What's the thread size on the Hornady's?

I'm not sure as I didn't buy one.

If you have the headspace gage attachment, just measure the headspace of your modified case and compare it to a case that was fired in your gun. It is only going to be the same length, longer or shorter so you just keep the same measurement, add or subtract. The headspace gage is very useful in setting up your sizing dies.

The thread pitch is 5/16-36 on the modified cases.

It's pretty simple to make one from one of your fired cases. You might want to shorten the neck slightly, but outside of drilling and tapping one hole, that's about it.
