I have about #60 of pure lead and I want to get the proper mixture for casting .40/65 & .45/70 bullets. I want a bullet on the soft side and have determined a 30 - 1 mixture should be about right. I checked "Buffalo Arms" and they want $16.50 per pound plus shipping and handling for tin. I paid $1.00 per pound for the lead, $16.50 sounds pretty steep, is that my only choice?

Try the swapping and selling section, see if you can make a deal. Tin won't be cheap. Offer a trade if you can.

The best local price I've been able to find on pure tin lately is on the order of $9-10/lb for recycled scrap. It's a good thing a little goes a long way!

You might get lucky and find some old bars of 50-50 or 60-40 bar solder or if you are really lucky, a spool of "lead-free" (read "pure tin") solder at a yard sale or flea market. Both of those are in very spotty supply, but easily mixed to the levels you mention.

What I found locally was questionable and expensive. I decided to not take a chances by cutting corners and ordered #3 from "Buffalo". I truly appreciate everyones advice, it is certainly nice to have such a helpful group.
