Has anyone figured out the diameter of a lead ball so the shot can be stacked 3 x 3 while loading Double 00 buck shot inside a straight case hull.

The standard Double 00 shot is too large in diameter to fit inside the wad. Diameter of Double 00 is around .330 inches.

There should be a size of shot slightly smaller than Double 00 that will stack 3 x 3 inside a plastic wad.

I did some measuring with a Clay-Buster Wad inside a RIO empty hull and the inside diameter of the wad inside the hull was around .645 inches.

Making a quick drawing with AutoCAD indicates a round ball with a diameter of .299 would fit and stack 3 x 3 inside the wad.

Buck Shot #1 has a diameter of .300 from Ballistic Products.

I was wondering if anyone else has come to the same conclusion and has anyone loaded the #1 buck shot instead of the Double 00.

Magma Engineering makes round ball molds for the Master Caster that are close to .300 in diameter, they have round ball molds in .298 and .312 inch diameter.

The .298 mold should make a round ball mold that should stack 3 x 3 inside a wad.

Any info will be appreciated.

#0 is best, it will stack real good.

Different wads have different petal thicknesses. That said, 3 - .311 pellets will stack perfectly in most shot wads. Also, buckshot weight and diameter is all over the map. Weigh and measure a sample of whatever pellets you buy or cast and load accordingly. If not, you can easily wind up + or - 60 to 70 grains in weight. True 00 is about 54 gr each and .33 diameter. I bought some high $ plated "00" that were 47 grns and .320 diameter. sharpshooter 00 molds are true and I've got a great 8 pellet HV load for those. Of the 2 you mentioned above. I'd use the .312 and cast them out of wheel weights, something harder than pure lead.

I loaded some Double 00 stacked 2 x 4 in a wad and this shoot good using HS-6 powder.

The .312 mold might be the best.

The Master Caster I have is automated with a PLC and will cast at 800 bullets per hour.

I will order the Master Caster mold for the .312 ball and give it a try.

i have the Sharp Shooter combination mold in #4 and Double 00 and cast with this mold.

I want to try the Master Caster for making buck shot. Hope it is faster than manually casting.

If you want a hunting load, 000 is the only way to go and you don't need the sleeve. 8 000 at about 1400 fps will change your mind about how far buckshot is effective. 9 00 at max velocity will reach out there. I'll take less shot and more velocity for Buckshot, bigger rather than smaller. Every barrel doesn't shoot the same, but I know what worked for me and what didn't work.

I'll see your 000 and raise you an 0 flounderman! 6 - 0000 (.375) is really bad medicine. At least I thought so until I got 2 - .600 balls screaming together downrange! 50 yds with 2 - 4" groups.
Carl: great info - you always da man!

That looks most useful. 9 of those is around 7/8 ounce. Would be light and lethal under 40 yards.

Supposedly and I haven't tried this yet, Federal Gold Medal (straight sides) and Federal wads allows this stacking. I bought cases, wads and have the 00 but haven't tried loading any yet. Search the net as I don't recall where I found this at the moment./beagle
