This was cross-posted over at the ASSRA forum without result, so I'm posting here in the hope of getting some useful information.

I just acquired a gorgeous schuetzen-style Ruger No. 1 ASSRA No. 26, in 32-40 and am looking for the maker. And no, this is NOT a "how much is it worth" inquiry. I am at minimum the third owner. The previous owner (deceased last year) acquired it from a person in Sedona, AZ, who inscribed his name beneath the butt plate when he acquired it in 1989. Beyond that is a cold trail. With the exception if a cryptic numbers beneath the octagon barrel, there are no other marking. I hope to find the gunsmith who built this rifle.

The butt stock appears to be claro black walnut; it and the forearm were finished with very well executed skipline checkering. The forearm is relieved of the action, and is not in contact with the hanger; there are two small screws at the rear of the forearm to provide some offset from the action. The hanger strut appears to have welding above the ejector spring?

The No. 3 profile octagon barrel is 28.5 inches long, tapering from 1.04" at the breech to 0.95" at the muzzle, which is target crowned. The RH twist appears to be 1:16. It came with Unertl blocks but no glass. The only identifying markings are "147-07-1113" stamped underneath the handguard. Anyone have a clue as to these markings? Rifling is 8-groove Ballard, The bore slugs .321.

The trigger pull is 5 lbs! Trigger appears to be a stock Ruger 2-screw without a "set" provision. I've not pulled the stock yet. Weight overall is 11.5 lbs.

The rifle is in overall excellent condition with just the barest of handling marks. If it has been fired it was immaculately maintained. There is virtually no wear on the action metal. Enjoy the pics. I'd sure appreciate information from anyone, I like to obtain pedigrees on my firearms.

My buddy has one in Vancouver WA. Made for "screwball" The action was sold to ASSRA Members and they were all built different like the link states.

HARRYMPOPE, I now have that rifle, obtained from E.G., his widow. I am in Vancouver as well. Were you referencing Ed S? I was told by Ed, a mutual friend of the PO that Square Ball was an interim but not the original owner/purchaser. The name M. Guy "Square Ball", Sedona AZ 6/3/1989 is electropenciled on the stock side of the butt plate. Questionablemaynard over at ASSRA told me he would see if the original owner could be identified without violating confidences. Thanks for the input. The SSN is an intriguing possibility!

Mike, no. The ASSRA files suggest Ruger does not have those records.

Square ball.I had it wrong.I remember when ed bought that gun, he may have got it at the Reno show I can't remember .he had nei make a mold for him because he thought something was wrong with the chamber not realizing it was set up to breech seat. there is another similar built rifle (I can't remember if its an assra gun) in 38-55 up in washougal.

I will have to ask Eileen about that one and Ed about that mold. Saw both yesterday at a little show, will see them again at the OAC show next Sunday.
Thanks.
