Ideal mold 452 460

Does anyone have information regarding this mold? I won it on E-bay (I was bidding for the handles) and I'm at work and don't have access to my Cast Bullet Handbook.

It's a dandy target bullet, a danged good small-game bullet, and likely an effective defensive bullet too, unless we're talking about bears.

I am right in the middle of an ammo-production run, today, with this bullet design, using up my leftovers from before I sold my 4-cavity mould to another gent here. Looks like maybe a thousand rounds or so will finally use up the remnants. I only sold the mould due to a desire to standardize my .45ACP loads, and I selected the old, mundane 452374 roundnose as the standard bullet.

The load I'm stuffing today is 5.5/231, WW LP primers, mixed brass, and the bullets are 201 grains in water-dropped WW metal, sized @.452". Cases are taper-crimped, and the bullet seated so that the shoulder is precisely at the case mouth. Every single round is checked with a Wilson cartridge gauge before being boxed.

Velocity from my SIG 220 is 830 fps, so it's not a hot load, but not a marshmallow, either. My 374s are loaded to the same speed, which is a perfect replica of the old issue hardball load.

The 452460 has fed perfectly for me in several different guns, INCLUDING a Colt commercial 1911A1 of 1959 vintage. This pistol has the old-style narrow feedramp profile, yet the SWC feeds just fine....which surprises me a bit, given some unfortunate experiences with '60s vintage .45 Gold Cup target-grade 1911s.

I really like the clean holes it cuts in target paper.

It will work good in a 45 Colt with 5-6 grains of Bullseye.

Love it so much I bought a lyman 4 cavity NEW a lot of years ago. There is no other target mold for a 45. Its a close copy of the H&G #68. Just add 3.5 grains of bullseye (that is chiseled in stone tablets) and you have a dandy 25 OR 50 yard target load. BruceB.....I'll never sell mine!

Sounds like I've lucked into a good buy. I'm not really a pistol shooter but I couldn't pass up on the price for a set of RCBS handles that came with the mold. I don't expect the mold to arrive until sometime next week so I'll give report on how it casts once it arrives.

452460 is the Lyman version of a very popular target bullet designed by Ed Rowland in 1940. Lyman introduced this bullet in 1949 and has been in production ever since. It carries a nominal weight of 215 grains. It will feed even in unaltered GI service pistols.

There are a couple of designs that will equal the accuracy of this bullet, but none will beat it. I shoot this bullet at about 850 fps and it delivers top notch accuracy in the 1911 pistol and several sixguns chambered for the 45 ACP round. Running 850 fps, this is an excellent field and defense load as well.

I like either Unique or AA5 powder with this bullet.

I have fired from a ransom rest 5 shot groups at 50 yards of less than 1.5" with that bullet and 4.0 of bullseye. That in a much worked over 1911(not A1) that has a clarke bbl.

My mold has a smaller dia first band, almost a bore ride.

I found the best accuracy with Linotype, BUT back then I didnt know about water dropping WW so I did not test that.

I will second Willbirds thoughts on this. Jim Clark, pistol smith in Shreveport, made me a combat carry 45 starting w/Colt commerical (not the series)in 1968. From Ransom rest at 50 yds it printed 2" groups with 3.9 gr Bullseye and this boolet cast of WW air cooled. Later chrono of this load showed vel of 794 fps. Used it in matches 1968-72.

I was the recipient of Bruce's 4-cavity #452460, and the boolit has proven to be a good shooter in my 45 ACP pistols. One of my buddies tried loads with the boolit seated with the shoulder about .030" outside the case in his TIGHT Kimber target variant 1911A1, and they failed to fully feed about 10% of the time.......seating them flush as indicated above corrected that problem. In less tightly-toleranced service pistols (1 SIG-Sauer and 2 S&W's), the boolit shoulders with the .030" clearance feed all right. FWIW.

5.0 grains of WW-231 has been a long-time light target load for me in this caliber with 185 and 200 grain boolits. It functions all of the service 45 ACP's I've tried it in over the years, the Kimber being one exception as rounds went up the pipe--which wasn't really a load-intensity problem.

My gun has been highly re-worked, and it is as tight as a boars's ass at fly time, BUT it always works every time (whole nother discussion)

I have always run the 452460 with the shoulder of the bullet out .03 and the case taper crimped to .470 dia.
