Powders for 308 170 gr C309-170-R

I've been using 32 grs IMR 4895 with both 170 gr FP and RN (GC) cast w Lyman #2. I'm getting around 2000 fps with LC brass. I have a few lbs of BLC(2) and am looking for a load for these lead bullets, I'm shooting a Ruger Scout Rifle. Looking for a plinking load.

Cast Pics shows a 308W BLC2 load for for the RCBS 165 Sil, which should be close enough to your needs. They list 27 grains as MAX, with 1939fps velocity. As usual, start low and work up. Welcome to the forum by the way.

Plinking load? Find some pistol powder and save the Ball-C for hunting season. 8-13 grs. Red Dot or Green Dot with a bare base Tumble lubed bullet will bring a smile to your face and accurate 50 yard loads.

Close on 1,600 as a ball park figure. That's great accuracy at that velocity when shot as a plain base boolit as the notes on the target indicate. It's probably about a max load for Red Dot. I too use Red Dot in plinking loads for the 30 calibre rifles and find it quite satisfactory.

The 311041 is from a plain based mold I bought on ebay. It was powder coated with no other lube. For my use, 13 grs. is the max that I load with Red Dot. On castpics, there are stouter loads but I stop at 13 grs. At 100 yards, the load shoot 3-4 inches. Cast from WW, the bullet weights 181 before powder coating.

The load on top is a Lee C312-185 made with WW and a little bit of tin. Sized to .311, it has a gas check and is tumbled in Ben's LL. It shoots 3 inches at 100 yards.

Both loads shot from a Weatherby Vanguard, 24" bbl with 1:12 twist.

When it warms up, I will set up the chronograph and measure speeds.

I have been using 2400 for my 308 but with the scarcity of any pistol ammo I have been looking around. Two days ago I tied both Re-7 and 4198 and with both there was a sub MOA load at a velocity of about 1850 from a 22 inch barrel. Sorry I don't have the specific loads handy.

Checked my notes. 23.7 gr of 4198 is sub MOA in my rifle while 30 gr of RE-7 is 1-1/2 MOA. Every rifle has its own personality with cast so enjoy your adventure. Welcome to our happy addiction.

My favorite is the C309-170-F which is similar on the base, but with a flat nose. I got close to 2400 fps with Rx7. These are 50 yard shots. For cheap plinkers, I like the Lee C309-113-F with 10g Unique. Real soft recoil and works at close ranges (25-50 yards) even without a gas check.

I'm in the process of trying to perfect a exceptional deer load for my Savage Axis 308 (22" barrel, 1-10 twist, cheap 3x9x40 scope-have a better one ordered).

Now:
C309-160-R, 1/10 WW/Lead 2%tin, Pc'd, GC'd, sized, WW-Super brass trimmed to 2.006",WLR primers, COAL 2.6 +/- .001, 20 gr's "IMR4227" with Dacron.

Soon:
C309-170-F, 1/10 WW/Lead 2%tin, Pc'd, GC'd, sized, WW-Super brass trimmed to 2.006", WLR primers, COAL (? have to reference) will test Rx7, 2400 and maybe H4895.

The "NOW"- I'm getting "OK" groups of 3" at 50 yds. I wanted to see if I could resurrect this thread to get a little more insight, especially if someone else owned this rifle, although I know every gun is different. I also am aware that I'll get better results with a flat nose as opposed to a round nose as far as hunting is concerned. Do not be afraid to be critical, I can take it! LOL I did post a couple questions elsewhere on here and got some good advice, just testing some more waters.

I achieved good results with 15.5 of blue dot behind a 180 grain flat point at 1800fps also an effective deer round

I don't remember the charges but I found some loads from the Lyman manual using Unique and IMR3031. I've used both loads and they were quite accurate in my 700 SPS Varmint .308. Alloy was straight Lyman #2 with Hornady Checks. The completed round is in my Avatar.

Thanks guys, had to correct post, I was using 20 gr's of IMR-4227 and NOT Rl7! The mold I used to cast with was a Lee 160 gr. mold. (Bullets weighed between 155-161). Lyman only lists the Lee 150 gr and next is a Lyman 160 gr. I ordered a Lee C309-170-F today. The Lyman 50th reloading manual lists a 173 gr. bullet (#311041) that looks real similar but may not be. COAL is 2.617".
