Question how much powder does that 12 ga hull hold and with the crimp folded in you would have to pull crimp out to pour powder

The Paper cartridge is meant to be able to tear the base off dump powder and ram paper wrapped minnie down bore in a simple easy motion with mininum number of movements. A mandrel made from a wood dowel sanded to bullet dia. 2 wraps of thin paper long enough for powder charge and a tail twist. I used glue sticks to hold paper wraps to form tube. Slide lubed bullet into tube pushing mandrell out. Pull mandrell out add wad if desired. add powder charge and twist tail tightly. When loading tear tail off pour powder down barrel and start bullet paper tube and all down ram tightly into place. cap and fire.

Question how much powder does that 12 ga hull hold and with the crimp folded in you would have to pull crimp out to pour powder

All in all a good idea!

I had the same thought about the in-folded crimp. Actually it could be made to work even better. 20,16 or 12 ga hulls could be tried for best friction fit. Without folding the crimp inward, the paper hull mouth could be wetted then slightly belled or smoothed out with a heated tapered expander until dry. Then just pour measured powder in hull and press paper bottomed Minié on top. Depending on ga used and paper thickness, seems it would be easy to find the best friction fit of the Minié in the hull. I was also thinking that wax paper could be used so the lube would have less chance of migrating into the powder during hot weather or long duration.

Or the hull could be trimmed to length if needed, then belled as above. That way the Minié would seat on the powder and wouldn't drop (or get pushed) below the rim of the hull. Some portion of the paper and bullet needs to be above the rim so it could be easily pulled out when ready to dump powder and load.

Anyway, let us know how it shoots. I have little faith in the Lee Improved design but results do vary.

Question how much powder does that 12 ga hull hold and with the crimp folded in you would have to pull crimp out to pour powder

the crimp is folded in the cartridge to the point there is no space between it and the wall of the cartridge itself. There is just sufficient enough resistance that it holds your lubed mini boolit with its newspaper in place with whatever powder charge you desire. Also the newspaper helps in pulling the boolit back out so you can dump your powder down the barrel and after that it becomes the wadding the protects the powder from the lube as it did in the 12ga shell. I've got a few ideas to refine this and I will share them with you as I come up with them I came up with this in the span of just a few minutes. I just didn't want to hassle with loose powder and boolits on the range or take the time to make true paper cartridges. As for how much the 12 gauge shell hold probably more than you're going to need.
But the powder I am using is my homemade screened powder so it's lighter and fluffier and takes up most of the space in the cartridge but if you have factory made powder you more than likely aren't going to need to fill the entire cartridge.
By the way those are good ideas fouronesix.
