i have a 1898 springfield armory(produced in 1903) in 30-40 krag. the boolit choice is the 165gr ranch dog gc rnfl(175gr actually).

i have rel7 and varget, but i'd like to find h4198. i already load three cartridges(20 vartarg, 444 marlin, 45-70), so a fourth would be just great.

i'm just trying to find a good deer(3" or less at 100 yards) cartridge. i have found in lymans reloading book one for imr4198(close but not h4198). any help would be greatly appeciated!!!:-P

Use the Lyman data for the IMR 4198 as a guide for your H 4198 and start with the minimum load and work up to what you want in a good, accurate and safe load.

By the way, my experience with Reloader 7 is that it generally has similar uses to the two 4198 powders and seems to work well in their stead. If you can't find H 4198, the IMR version is just as good and if all else fails in your search, IMR SR 4759 and Acurate 5744 powders all do well in the old 30/40 Krag.

Have you checked your bore dimensions yet? My 1898 Krag rifle really likes boolits sized to .313" but that's my rifle. Krag bore dimensions, while probably not as varied as Lee Enfield bores can still be all over the map.

my bore dia. goes .3085", so i figure it to be .311" for the boolits.

I too am running low on the IMR 4198 but have got similar if not exact performance with H 4198.
I have had good results in all my rifles with the Reloader 7.
And along with the other two mentioned like the SR 4759 a 5744 all are excellent for cast boolits as well as reduced " J " bullet loads.
