Here's the deal...

I've got a H-R receiver and I suppose a choice of 4 barrels which I need to choose one from:

1) 38-55
2) 45-70 22"
3) 45-70 32"
4) 444

Which of the 4 barrels would lend itself best to paper patching? I would think the 444 would be the least likely candidate because of the lack of bullet molds and I understand the 444 H-R barrels mike over .430" in the grooves. I want to use only smokeless powder. Are all four barrels drilled and tapped for a scope mount?

Either of the 45-70s due to availability of heavy 45 handgun boolits to patch up.

45 2.1,

Good point. Can you cite an example? You mean something like Lyman 452651?

Any 250 gr. or above plain based slug (the 454190 is great, anything with more bearing surface than nose) that casts 0.452" to 0.454". No sizing needed before patching there. The Lyman 457191 is excellent if run thru a Lee push thru 0.454" diameter prior to patching. Cast all of them out of very soft lead and patch with 9 lb. onionskin paper (25% rag content or so).
