View Full Version : Replacement wood - Lyman 4 Cav. Handles
Recently I purchased some used Lyman 4 cav. mold handles, the wood was burned , cracked and loose on the metal. I contacted a friend that had a lathe and asked if he could turn some new hardwood handles for me. He said, " You bet I can". He made me new handles, and new copper ferrules . These handles are better than new now.

It looks like Oak...
John
Yes, I think it was Oak .
The wood is super hard, clear grained, should make some fine handles.
Much better than factory Lyman handles.

If the wood color is natural and not stained it may be Purpleheart from South America. The grain looks correct as well.

GLL :
Nope, the color isn't natural, I put stain on the handles and then applied several coats of poly after the staining.

I don't have a lathe, unfortunately:(, but there is a viable substitute that I have used with success. That is a hardwood dowel of the proper size. I drilled it out for the steel on my drill press, then installed it either with a small #5 bolt and nut or now I use High Temperature Silicone Seal from the auto parts store. The high temperature silicone is also great to use on handles that have come loose. You can apply, reseat the handles, and immediately start casting.

I have turned some Purpleheart for making pens. Right after turning, it's brown. I think it must turn purple as it's exposed to light/air.
