The most I've ever done is 40gr. Once you unfold the rim, the shell is 0.5" long. You might be able to shoe-horn 45gr, but it would definitely be a soft point and no longer hollow point.

Yeah, had to first switch over to 224 from the 452 I've been doing lots of. First, was to derim some 22 short. You can see they're 0.508"

Next, made up three swaged cores weighing 27.5, 32.5 and 37.5 grains

Keep in mind the 22 shorts weigh 7.5 grains so this will test total weights of 35, 40 and 45 grains. Next, I placed the cores in the 22 shorts:

Compressed the cores:

Lastly, point formed:

I misspoke earlier. With 22 shorts I make 35 grain hollow points, NOT 40 grains. For 40gr I use RCECO 0.6" long jackets. You can see the 35gr above looks decent, but by the time I got to 40, lead was coming out the tip. 45gr was a total mess. I didn't form the point to the same extent as the previous two.

I revise my earlier advice to say that 37-38 is probably the most you can squeeze into a 22 short. With the scarcity of 22 shorts, I went with the 0.6" gilding metal jacket, made up 40gr for 5.7x28, and called it a day.

Hope this helps,

how many graine you can swage 22 short to 223I do not have access to shorts and so cut LR cases to the same length and then de rim. I make some very pretty 40 grain open tip with a 1E tip. No lead comes out of the jacket when point forming with the 1E. I also make 35 grain pills with the same length jacket but the jacket must be annealed as there is little support when point forming and you can fold up the jackets easily.Bill

Dunno. I am loading these for 5.7x28. I figure 223 will push these waaaaay too fast. Having a 6S ogive means there's not a lot of bearing surface. Going with a 1E like Bills Shed does, is better because more of the bullet will be at 0.224" diameter. There would be more for the brass mouth and the rifling to grab onto.
