Evilbay has an auction going for what appears to be a three round, single stack magazine for a 98 Mauser action. Would this be for a .45-70 conversion?

I messaged the seller asking what cartridge the clip was made for and he did not know. I looks as if it replaces the floorplate and has a block of metal at the back of the magazine box to shorten the length of the box. I's wandering if it might be a possible way to allow feeding the .30-30 round in a Mauser action.

They made two versions at one time.
One for long cartridges like the .270 and 30-06
and a shorter version for the .243 and .308.

I'm not aware that one was ever made for 30-30 or 45-70.

Have seen Model 70 winchesters and a few rem 700s NRA match rifle ( over the course) set up to use M14 or AR 15 mags. It was a popular conversion for hunting rifles when being sporterized years ago. Some of these conversionns required the feed rails to be milled or ground out of the action, meaning you could never go back to a floor plate style mag.

Gibbs made a 45 70 summit carbine based on the Lee Enfield. Just Google Gibbs 45 70 and all will be revealed.

OK, this must be for the shorter cartridges. Since it was single stack I was thinking it might be possible to modify the magazine lips to allow feeding of a .30-30 round.

The Gibbs isn't a single stack it's a standard 303 magazine. The only single stack 45-70 mags i know of were for the Lee rifle. It looked like a 303 but was single stack. The 303 mags for the Gibbs needed work to function with more than 3 rounds in them with a lot of tuning you could get up to 5 working.

I will bet you will ever need a second magazine. The SMLE mag's were all fitted to the gun and were loaded from the top.

WEARING OUT NO, LOST IF REMOVED .

Don't take it out or replace immediately after cleaning. I have owned at least 50 SMLE'S and the only guns I have bought a mag for were the $5 buck specials missing it's original.

In the late 60's and early 70's SMLE'S were worth at best 25-30 bucks including the early III's. Them were the days.

I remember buying WWII MK7 rounds for $8.00 US dollars per 1000!

Cheap offhand shooting don't ya know!

$8/1000??? You must be old!! LOL. I am 64 years old and I remember $8/100 bandoleer as a teenager. Would love to see that again.

Well this old fart remembers paying $10 a hundred back in the late '60's. Sounds like you had a good source for ammo. But in NYC even back then not many shops stocked surplus ammo. Frank
