I played with a couple new molds this morning. Lyman 41028 single cavity and Lyman 410426 single. I have hopes that the 41028 will function through my Marlin FG, should be good for both Rugers as well. The 410426 is about a 240 gr. round nose that just looks kinda cool. I think it will be a good heavy load in my 7.5" Red Hawk. I just aquired these molds, both NEW, but old and never cast with before today. Yeah, they're single cavs and only drop 1 boolit at a time, but after I got them both going good they cast some beautiful boolits. I am looking forward to loading and shooting them both. JW

I always enjoy casting with single and double cav Lyman moulds. Congrats on your new old moulds, hope they work out for you.

JW, I just cast with an NOS mould, last Thursday. I had in my inventory, a Lyman 457193 (single cavity), that looked like it had never been used. Took me a couple of tries scrubbing it, before I got it clean enough to start dropping good boolits.
I sized 100 of the results to .460 and lubed with 50/50, and gave them to a friend to present to a friend of his, for use in an OLD Marlin 45/70 with the octagon barrel.
One boolit at a time may seem tedious, but it was easy to develop a rhythm, and drop good boolits - which is what we're after in the long run!

Both of my 41028 SC molds drop large, .413 cast soft and .414 cast hard. They size down to my preferred .411 quite well My 410426 drops small, .4095 when I cast it soft, will usually make .4105 when harder alloy is used. I like both styles. I haven't gotten around to trying the '28 in my FG, yet.

Not tedious, I prefer to consider it therapeutic. My 457193 even seems to prefer a ladle. Doesn't really take all that long to cast a nice pile, not a boolit I shoot a bunch of anyway.

Idaho Mule,
The 41028 is a nice load in the 1858 reworked to be a .41.
Looking forward to trying it in the Black Hawk.
Would like to see any load data you come up with.

Just came in from my loading shack. I sized the 41028's to .410 but have not loaded any yet. As far as the casting with single cavities goes, I like it, a lot. I have other multi-cavs and work well with them too, but the singles are somehow theraputic-like I guess. I occasionally cast with an old 358311 and 3118 singles. They are just fun, and I have good thoughts while using them. These new to me .41's feel good to me too, and man do they cast some NICE boolits. As far as loads go, I think I will start these 41028's with 17 to 17.5 gr. of AA9. I would love to try 18 gr of 2400 but am kinda low on that one at this time. Main thing right now is just to see if they will function thru the Marlin's action. I think they will as they are VERY close in profile to the Hornady 210xtp, but .020 shorter. Will keep you posted. I don't have pics, but it was success. That 41028 feeds through the Marlin like a hot knife through butter!! I think I will try to get the boolit a little fatter to fit the bore a tad better, but that can be done. Main thing at this point is that it feeds so well. Tried a few through the Redhawk and Blackhawk too, both seem to like it. Then I tried some of the 410426's through the Redhawk-- Holy Cow!! was that cool!! I had them loaded with 15.5 gr. of 2400, with a COAL of 1.705, sized at .410 they just push through the throats. That is a nice load to shoot, not wild but good thump to it and just exploded my water filled milk jug target. I gotta get some more cast up soon. JW

Lyman 410426 was originally the cast bullet for the .401 Winchester Self-Loading used in the 1910 rifle.
