Does anyone have any experience with this? I would like to have a 357 Max and a 45/70 rifle to shoot cast in. Would the Encore be too light of a rifle to enjoy shooting the 45/70?

I have thought about buying a Ruger #1 in 45/70 but that is going to cost a lot more money unless I was extremely lucky. Going the Encore route, I could theoretically get into the two rifles for less money. BUT, I don't want to end up with something that is going to be unsuitable for the cartridge just to save some money.

Thanks,

Crabo

Get the Ruger.... By the time you buy the barrels, scopes, rings and bases you'll be paying more anyway. Besides, the Ruger is PRETTY!

Well I have a 45-70 Encore rifle, and with 400 grain Ruger #1 pressure loads and synthetic stocks(about 6 pounds w/ scope) the recoil is fierce. Makes my 8 lb 375H&H seem like a walk in the park. With lighter loads the recoil is manageable.

My B-I-L has the Encore with a 45-70 barrel. Recoil is vicious with factory loads. He put the recoil-reducing stock on it, and sent the barrel to Mag-Na-Port in MI. to be ported. Very little improvement (he estimates ~20% reduction). I am about to start experimenting with handloads to get him something milder.

Depends what you load your 45-70 with. If you use a 300 gr bullet at about 1000 to 1400 fps you will not get beat up too badly and it will take deer just fine. However if you load it with a 400 gr bullet and push it out at 1800 to 2000 fps you will have pain unless you are completely recoil insensitive. I have owned light rifles in 45-70 and always shoot light loads for general work. When I need them I load hot loads and zero the rifle using a past magnum recoil sheild then reserve that load and rifle for hunting. Funny thing is I never notice the recoil when shooting at game.
