My brother gave me an almost full old 8 pound keg of Winchester 571 that came with a reloading bench he bought. What cast bullet loads would it be good for?

I have a1997 Winchester powder manual that lists loads for 38 special, 9mm, 40S&W, and 45acp using win 571. You can find a copy to download at castpics. That is where I got it.

I think it's the same stuff as HS-7. I have an unopened pound of it, been trying to figure out what to do with it.

Ok, thanks. I made a copy of the 1997 Winchester manual also. I have a 1989 Winchester manual that doesn't list any W-571 data for handguns.

So, who sells the HS-7 powder now? Maybe I could look in their reloading catalog for uses of HS-7. I had never heard of HS-7?

Don't have any experience loading cast with 571 but I've loaded lots of 12ga 1 1/2 oz. loads with it.
Back when you could use lead for waterfowl it was my go-to powder for duck loads and still works for pheasants.

I only load 1 ounce loads in 12 gauge for trap shooting and a little rabbit and squirrel hunting. And no pheasants here in Missouri. I don't hunt geese but with all of these requirements for non-toxic shot I don't think I could afford to take it up. And if I took up hunting turkey with heavy loads it would take me forever to shoot up 8 pounds of the W-571.

A little faster than Blue Dot, a little slower than 800X. HS-7 and AA7 are on either side of it

I don't think that Hodgdon is selling HS-7 anymore. They do however sell HS-6 which is the same as WW-540 and a bit faster burning than HS-7. HS-6 is a good cast boolet powder for 40 S&W, so maybe you could find a load for cast using your 571 which I also used for 1 1/2oz. bird loads in 12 ga. I would think that some 20 and 28 ga. loads using it could be found.

HS = Hodgdon Shotgun Powder

HS-7 and Win 571 were the same powder........discontinued. I liked this powder for mid-level Ruger Only 45 Colt loads and used it nicely in 454 Casull for the same purpose. I also liked it with 40 S&W when using heavier cast boolits.

Get a Hodgdon powder manual off Ebay, #25 and #26 have tons of HS7 data

WW571 was an excellent magnum shotgun powder. I used a lot of it back when we could use lead shot on ducks and geese in 2 3/4 and 3" magnum 12 ga. and heavy 20 ga. loads.

I use it in 40 S&W 180gr. I have a little over a pound left and wish I had more. It is a pity Hodgdon discontinued it.

Thanks. I already have a Hodgdon #25. I just didn't know to look for loads for HS-7 in there. Thanks for your help.

If you can find a mid-90's Hodgdon pamphlet they have loads for alot of the pistols cartridges. I have 5-6lbs of HS-7 and love it in the 38/357, 45 Colt and even the 9mm. Also have used it in the 30/30 for some loads around 1100fps or so.

Winchester 571 is THE powder for heavy bullet loads in 10mm. When it was announced that it was being discontinued, I bought the entire stock Widener's had on hand at the time. I'm down to about the last 5 pounds of it now.

It's too bad you're so far away, or I'd trade you some other common pistol powder for it.

As noted, HS-7 and Winchester 571 were the very same, and both have been discontinued.

Hope this helps.

Lee second edition has some loads in the 44 Mag with HS 7 so you could likely find loads for other cartridges in there.
13.3 and 429421 gives me right at 1" outside to outside at 50 yards in 10" Contender.

Same with the 250 RNFP GB boolit and that is the best that boolit has done with any load in any gun I have shot it out of.

QL says I should be getting about 1250 fps out of that load.

Swheeler,

That Hodgdon Manuel #26 is my most used manual of all of the dozens I own. I use HS-7 in my Super Blackhawk for a midrange 250 grain cast boolit load. VERY accurate and satisfyingly powerful as a general use walk about load. I'm sorry it's been discontinued!

Don Mountain,
I'll see if you want to get rid of it when I head to Eminence this June. Loved that stuff in my magnum shot loads.

It is THE powder for full power .38 Super ammo. You can reach about to .357 Mag
ballistics (1250 fps with 158 gr) in a 4" bbl in a 1911 in .38 Super. Chronoed at 1400 fps
with 124 gr XTP in mine.

Yes it was a popular powder with the USPSA/IPSC gang for .38 super major power factor very clean left a little yellow ash in my race gun. Loved it in 9MM major as well had to compress it some and I still have more than 8lbs left. Meters great in the Dillons and is one of the powders that doesn't tend to make the case rupture in 9 major as you push past SAMMI specs in 9. It produces good downward force out of a compensator it's great in most auto pistols w/ moderate barrel lengths that you want upper end velocity out of.

Both W571 and HS-7 are the same and discontinued, they were brought out for heavy 12 gauge shotshells using lead shot, like we all used back in the day for ducks and geese. Newer powders were brought out for loading steel shot at higher velocities, also for ducks and geese.
