I picked up a beater Marlin 336, and think it can be brought back to life. Going to re-finish the wood , "the Rodger Method" that was kindly made into a sticky. Need to replace some screws that bubba damaged and a few other minor items.
The receiver has some what I would call light spotting. Not really pits but the beginning of them from lack of oil. I was curious what I can do to attempt and remove them to make metal like new and not remove what bluing remains? Wasn't sure if steel wool or scotch pad would damage the metal. I have even thought about doing a duracoat job on this, but think the rifle is still to nice for that.
thanks for the guidance

Bronze wool would be less likely to scratch the bluing. Steel wool will scratch it although it may be small scratches.

4 ought steel wool and G96 seems to do better than most oils. Not sure
what different is in G96, but it seems to remove more of these minor surface
rust issues than other gun products.
