A friend of mine is trading in his 1886 winchester trapper he shot once. I saw his shoulder afterward, but it was factory loads. Hornady I think. I really prefer octagon barrels. Just wondered if anyone was actually shooting them. Google searches only turn lots of for sale adds and/or speculation about how they might kick. I've owned some guide guns and shot mostly bp through them. This thing seems like it would make a great, if not overpriced brush gun for hunting with bp.

When I shoot my muzzle loader with a curved buttplate, you put the buttplate in the crease of your upper arm, not the shoulder. doesn't hurt that way. A .45 cal muzzleloader will wake you up trying to shoot on the shoulder, but put it in the crease of your arm and you can shoot all day. Maybe that is how it should be done with any curved buttplate firearm?

Range, plinking, or practice - Pachmayr slip on recoil pad
Hunting - you will never feel the recoil

From shooting your guide gun with BP, you know how that feels. To me, it is about like a 12 ga trap load. If you are shooting smokeless high velocity loads in guide gun or even full sized 10 pound 86, think in terms of .458 Win. Mag. To me, it is not pleasant.

Well I let it go to another home. I've got a lot of rifles with crescent buttplates, including too many muzzleloaders. One of the worst I had was a winchester 1885 in .45-70. At 7.5 lbs it was not pretty off the bench or a rest. Ironically, I traded it to the guy who got rid of the 1886 and he did buy a past pad for the 1885 he got from me. I'm going to hold out for a different 1886.
