Even though I don't farm for a living, the family has a small plot of land that I frequent for the hunting and fishing. We let old Uncle Larry plow the fields. Anyway, was down last Friday and got talking to the Farmer that has the land adjacent to ours. He knows I reload, so you can imagine my surprise when he asked me if I was interested in getting any gun powder...Ahhhhh Yah!!

Well it turns out that the Department of Agriculture (!!!!) had some for sale so I'll be picking of 8lbs of WSF this week for $135. Not too bad since there's no sales tax attached. Gave him my "powder wish list" and asked him to put me on speed dial.

Now, for the life of me, I can't figure out why the Department of Agriculture is in the powder business when you can't find any on the shelf. I guess as long as I can grab some at a decent price I'll just be thankful. Have used WSF for 9mm in the past but could use some new recipes' for 45ACP if anyone has loaded with it.

the new hodgdons manuals have the Winchester powders in them.

the dept of agriculture takes care of the farmers, airc they used to hand out a few rounds of ammo during ww-2.
and you could get blasting powder, dynamite, caps, etc. from them too.

Good to know. A few pounds of C4 could come in handy. First time I've heard of this program. Will have to keep my eyes open for further "benefits".

Yes, I check Hodgdon's site. Was curious if anyone had a pet load using WSF in a 45ACP since I'll soon a bunch of it to play with. Just trying to cutout a little work up time.

I do use wsf in 45acp. I believ its a lee .452-230tc with 6.0 wsf. I cant remember the oal but its fairly short with that boolit. Very accurate and recoil is nearing factory stuff. Ymmv

Thank you! Lee 230gr TC is what I cast most with for 45ACP's. Second choice is Lee's 200gr LSWC. Good info. I'll give it a try.

5.5gr. WSF with a 230gr. RNL gives 790-800 fps in my 1911 and just over 750 fps in a 4 inch revolver.

Its a little dirty because of low pressure, but accurate.

The U.S. Forest Service is in the Department of Agriculture they buy ammunition for their Law Enforcement Officers. Don't know if they buy powder or not.
