Hello . I bought a can of 2x Triple 7 powder which is all the vendor had or expected to have. We are talking about a Lyman Plains Pistol 54 caliber in this note. Now one old timer says that to shoot as I want caz it all goes Boom. On the other hand the man at the Muzzleloader Shop had 2 yellow and 3 tiger striped kittens when I showed my ignorance on the question. What do youall think Mad Jack would do?

2F will work just fine, though 3F is what most people use in pistols even though it's of a larger caliber. Many believe that 3F is for callers .50 and under and 2F is for .50 and over.

I intend to use 3F no matter what as I really don't care to need more powders to concern myself with, though I'd consider 4F if/when I get a .32 cal or a flintlock. But many flintlock shooters use 3F in their pan.

3F will give a slightly quicker burn with a sharper pressure curve and produce a little more velocity when compared by volume. It will also create less fouling than 2F.

The "book" says fffg in pistols. The only issue would be unburnt powder coming out of the muzzle.
Other than that I have never used triple seven.

I use fff in a 54 cal. GP rifle. I see no reason why it wouldn't work just as well in the pistol.
