I finished annealing my first batch of gas checks.

I wrapped them in tissue paper, put them in a 3/4" pipe with caps, put it on the stove and turned the flame on for 15 -- 20 minutes. Some smoke came through the cap threads. Opened it up and emptied it out, so 2 questions arise.

1-- The tissue paper looked like charred lined. Is this correct or should it have been totally consumed?

2-- When I anneal cases, the neck turns blue. The gas checks dulled in color a little, but were not blue. Are they annealed?

Yep to both. You now have checks that are softer than previously they were. You can test that if you wish with a file against them and non annealed. Annealed are not for all aplications but work for the hard to get on bases for me. Gianni

As I understand it, the purpose of the paper is to burn until it consumes all the oxygen in the pipe. Once that occurs, no combustion can happen.

No oxygen = no oxidation and probably accounts for the difference in color from annealed cases. DALE
