I made up some cheddite hulls w/ 70 2Fg, .600 round ball and beeswax/vaseline. I got out this weekend to try it out. Shot great! Just a question for some of the other Snider shooters - a 209 primer seems to fit OK. What have others done, recommend...

A normal #209 primer fits fine for a few reloads in Cheddite 24 gauge shells. After a few reloadings the primer pocket seems to enlarge. A few of my 4-times used Cheddite cases will let the #209 fall out. I have taken to using "Elmer's" white glue (on primer pocket) to get a few extra reloads out of those, and will trash them next time around. My loads are similar, using 70 grains of OE 1.5Fg and either .600 round ball or 20 gauge Lyman foster slug.

.600 ball sometimes sticks in my chamber. Just saying. I did buy some .595 - have not shot those yet.

Please elaborate on the ammo: Special cartridge cases made for a shotgun primer? Or using modified shotgun shells? Minie ball in a 20 gauge case? One of our local shops has a Snider that is mildly tempting - what's it take to make it shoot?

Cheddite hulls are regular European-made primed shotshells for Euro 24-gauge shotguns. To modify them for use in the .577 Snider, you just need to trim the hulls to an overall length of exactly 2-inches, then pour in the blackpowder load, usually 65-70 grains of 2F musket powder, and press in a .600 diameter lead round ball with your thumb. Seal the ball with some bullet lube, or even Crisco shortening, and you're ready to go. I get my Cheddite shells from Grafs in bags of 100. http://www.grafs.com/retail/catalog/product/productId/2524

I have had good luck with the Mag-tech 24ga. brass hulls formed to 577 Snider. Easy to form and use a large primer.

The MagTech brass cases are great after trimming and sizing. Unfortunately, they need to be washed and tumbled after shooting with real black powder or even with the substitutes. The plastic cases get dirty but don't corrode. Besides, they usually burn through after 7 or 8 reloadings (sometimes less). The Cheddite case walls are somewhat thicker so sometimes loading .600 round balls in them and they won't chamber. Most Sniders I have slugged are around .590-593" groove diameter in front of the chamber, so a .595 round ball will usually work fine. I load 70 grains of Old Eyneford 1.5Fg, a 1/8" card and a 3/8" fiber wad under the .600 ball using Cheddite cases. 24 gauge shot shell wads are available from Track of the Wolf.

I've got some MagTech brass, and the Lee dies set. I found a place on line that sells felt - Dura-Felt, and I've been looking for vegetable fiber sheets. Of the ones I've found, I'd need to order a 300 year supply. Anybody here cut their own fiber wads, and if so, where can I order fiber sheets at a reasonable cost? Thanks.

I found equalseal.com and ordered the 1/8" thick card material... And I didn't need to order a 50 ft roll of the stuff.

Track of the Wolf? over powder wads for 24 gauge - I don't know if it would work, but 24 ga. Cheddite hulls....

Buffalo Arms used to sell the veggie wad sheets. I haven't checked lately.

I got the vegetable wad sheets today, and a 19/32 punch from this place - http://www.bloomertool.com/Wad-Punches.html (http://www.bloomertool.com/Wad-Punches.html)The cheddite hulls are pretty easy to load, and quite accurate with .600 round ball.

As for the Magtech brass, it forms very easily with the Lee sizer die. I expect that once fire formed it will expand out to about .590 - .600 based on what I've read. Once I get a read on what happens after fire forming, I'll have order a mould for it...

Yeah, I checked that site out. Looks like there's a edge price wise, I may order from them in the future.
