The recipes depend on which empty hull you use, I always use Hodgdons reloading website it is a great website. Of those powders I think they list a recipe for HS-6 and depending on your hull what the powder charge would be

They also depend on if you cast your shot or bought it. Boughten shot is smaller so it will fit better than casted true sized shot.

"Boughten shot is smaller so it will fit better than casted true sized shot."

#00 buck is slightly too large and may dimple the hull/wad. If possible, use #0 as it will stack nicely.

That load using HS6 is very close to the load I used to assemble for OO buck. I was using the WW powder Hodgdon packaged into HS6 after they removed the WW powder from the line. IIRC it was WW540 or WW560. I used the powder charge bar for 1 1/4 OZ magnum loads. Cut the petals off the plastic wads to make room for the triangle three ball layers of OO. Or like jmoretimer said the cases show bulges. Got nice patterns with the slow powder and great velocity and penetration. I did have a Lyman manual showing loads. Didn't just pull it from my hat. Thus I'm a believer in a large charge of slow powder to push OO buck along with as little shot deformation as you can get. FWIW, six 36 caliber pistol balls can make a very destructive load. The single O buck is quite a bit lighter than OO and I've found doesn't have the range or whack um that OO has. I'd use a 12 ball load if I was using O buck. I still have a couple five pound bags of O buck around here.

My SIL regularly uses #1 buck from 12 gage to smack coyotes. None have gone anywhere after the shot.

I will freely admit my ignorance on this topic. I have done some reading online, but that is all.

I know that hulls from different manufacturers have seemingly subtle differences - some have ridges, some feel like the plastic is slightly stiffer, etc.

How does the brand and/or style of hull affect which powder & weight of charge is used? I guess I am trying to compare shotgun shells to metallic cartridge reloading.

You must use load data for the specific brand and type shell. Internal capacity varies. Wads need to be matched to the load also. Remember the shot shell base and bottom of wad is what makes up your powder space. Wads collapse at various pressures and so forth. I know from when I was a youngster and would load whatever could pick up of the ground at the gun club. Even using field and trap level loads I'd get hot loads that would open the primer pocket up to where they would not hold a primer again. Now and then I'd have a primer pop out from a round in the tube magazine on my pump gun. Recoil of a few rounds as it rode the tube was enough to eject them. I finally figured it out. Follow the books by the letter.

I load 00 buck in 2 1/2" 410 and I cast my own and all I done is just replace the shot of the data I use and put 4, 00buck shot in and that is it.For my test is for the my own cast after cutting off the spur I had no patten for the shot, but after I roll the shot to take the sharp edges off I had a patten ,at 20 yards I had a 7" patten and at 15 yards I had a 5 " patten. This is a full choke barrel .

Have you ever weighed the 4pc of 00buck? I wonder how close it is to the 1/2oz payload If it's a little light I would be inclined to use the lower FPS loads that are listed due to the 410 bore and how it creates a lot of pressure. Great idea in a home defense round!

I did not weight the 4pc of 00buck . It was pure lead I cast them with.I just weight the 4 and it comes out to about
13.14 gram = 0.4634998593660001 ounce
So it is just about 1/2 ounce. I also use the regular wads also that I use for shot.

Hey shotgun57, a little late to the game. I see the components you have available and wish I could be of more help.

I have worked up a great #00 buckshot load that works for me shooting a 600AT Mossberg with 28" barrel and the poly choke set on full.

Now with that said you should always follow the reloading manuals however, probally will have several opinions on this issue. If I don't have the exact components available I will use the listed weight of shot payloads in reloading manuals and using the listed powder for that particular load I will start my load at 10% less of starting load and work my way up.

Be careful and not load a straight wall hull load into a tapered hull as this will cause some possible pressure issues.

I cast all my #00 buckshot using coww. Here's the load that works for me:

12 gauge/ 2-3/4" Cheddite straight wall hulls or equivalent.
Primer: Cheddite 209, Nobel Sport209/686 or Rio 209.
Powder: 26gr. Hi-Skor 800-X.
Wad: CB1138-12
Shot: #00 buckshot, 10EA stacked 2 x 2 in wad.
Nitro card: 20 gauge .125 set on top of buckshot, pre-crimp then final crimp.
Pressure: 10,300
Velocity: approximately 1,300 fps.

The load I'm currently using:

Cheddite 2 3/4"
Ched209
30.5gr BlueDot
FS12 Gas seal
Teflon wrapper
3x5=15 00 made from WDWW
pressure 9,400
1060fps
