View Full Version : H110 under hard cast lead bullets?

I just ordered some hard cast lead 158 gn SWC's in .357 from MBC as well as some 240 grain hard cast Keith styles for my .44 magnum.

My intention was to put them on top of stout charges of 4227 or H110 and really make these guns bark a bit. But I've got people telling me H110 shouldn't be used with lead bullets and 4227 is too slow for .357 magnum? I don't believe either of these statements, what's the truth?

H110 is all I use in my 357s. Did those same people tell you don't use lead bullets because they will lead your barrel? Some people like to talk about things they know nothing about.

Did those same people tell you don't use lead bullets because they will lead your barrel? Some people like to talk about things they know nothing about. Amen to that!
I have burned quite a few 8 lb. kegs of 296(H110 by another name) since the 70's under cast lead bullets in both the .357 and .44 mag. If you want to go fast with cast and excellent accuracy 110/296 is the goto powder.

Take them to the limit, I use nothing but 296 in my revolvers, .44 ,475 and .500 JRH. Used it in the .357 too.
I do not like 4227 in the .44 but in the .357, it will work.
Who in the world are you talking to?

Neither of those powders are my favorite for your application, but both will do a good job in that role. Have at it!

If heavy loads are my goal, H-110 is usually what I reach for.

Heavy bullets + 296/H110 in .44 mag = success & joy.

Load em up. No issues. Whoever said you can't use 4227 and 296 shouldn't be giving advise on reloading. At least you came here for the correct answer.

Hogwash, as usual from "those guys". No problems at all with H110 and cast.

I have shot as soft as 8 BHN with good accuracy over 16.3 gr of H110 which is a full
power load, no leading.

H110 is all I use for 480 Ruger with 400 gr. boolits and 44 mag. also.

W296 (H110) is about all I use in my .44 mags and .454s. Just make sure you are using fairly hard cast bullets or gas checked bullets. . .

No need for hard cast with H110., or gas checks.

This is 8 BHN without a gas check. "Requirement" for hard alloy or GC is the standard
old wives tale.

That is the only powder I used when I was shooting IHMSA. .357 Mag., .41 Mag. used cast for chickens & pigs, jacketed for turkeys and rams.

Wow I would never ask those people for advise again. Although not my favorite in 44 I have used a metric ton of it in cast and handguns. I really prefer 2400 in .44 and .41. I do have a little pet load with a 178gr in the .357 with it.

As far as disinformation goes......cast bullet shooting and reloading seems to have bred more bad info than it ever produced of the good data. This site was originally intended as a storehouse of factual information concerning this hobby field, and generally still serves in that capacity. I have burned many flasks of H-110 and its Winchester twin WW-296 under cast bullets in 357, 41, and 44 Magnum. My view of the stuff is that it produces more velocity in good revolvers with less pressure than do a lot of other MagRev fuels in general use. My only problem has been locating the stuff for the past 3 years, as its makers have been fiddling while Rome burned.

Really? It was the last powder I bought after Sandy Hook. And it was the first powder to really come back. Hard not to find H110 or W296 on the shelf. Just shows you how regionalized everything is.

Just bought a pound of H110 on Friday. No other pistol powders available at the time. This is in NW GA. A little pricy at $26 but I buy when I can.

Bill+1. I use more 2400 powder, but I also work up loads in my .357 and .44 mags with H110, When one powder is not available, I have the other to fall back on. H110 is the velocity winner, usually beating 2400 with the same boolit, when I chronograph the loads.

Just a tip, if those store bought hard cast bollits give you any leading, try tumble lubing them in Lee Alox, I find sometimes this works great.

It has been well covered on this thread but yes, H110 works just fine for magnum loads in 44 . I shoot very few full magnum loads in 357 & 44 but H110 is my goto powder when I want to make those bullets go fast.
As for gas checks on pistol bullets; I despise them and avoid using them.

Well thank you everyone for dispelling the misinformation that is out there! Definitely put my mind at ease :D
