Early 1881 Marlin in 40/60. Brass made from 45/70. Saw it at a local gunsmth's shop where it's in for a cleaning and ammo. Three digit serial number. Must be pretty rare. Can't find another like it online. Any info anyone can add would be appreciated !

I've seen 1881 Marlins at gun shows here around the Intermountain West but never in 40-60. Always 45-70

There was more 40-60 Marlins made than 45-70.
45cal-4,769 made 40cal-6261 made.
That is the first one I've seen in that configuration, with crescent buttstock&tool compartment.
The first 4,000 were mgf'd 1881-1882.

40-60 Marlin is interchangeable with Winchesters 40-65. But not with Winchesters 40-60 cartridge. (A littl unusual.) Octagon-to-round. To see a wedding band. {That's a first for me.} Must be reminiscent of by gone years I suspect when swamped barrels were largely in vogue.
