My rifle will probably be sent to turnbull to get color case hardened, then some engraving done. Do any of you all have color case hardened guns you would be willing to post a picture of?! Also, do you take special care of them? Like keep them out of direct sunlight? I guess my real question here is , is it worth the extra care you need to take care of them to actually use them?:killingpc

I will get pictures up later, but I treat my CCH guns like any other gun. I like how they wear with age.

True CCH with a good bluing, just doesn't get any better. Turnbull is THE Master of his craft.

I have two Turnbull CCH guns and I don't give them any more "special" care than I give my other guns. However, I don't ignore or abuse any of my guns. After taking them out hunting or shooting I give them a wipe down with G96 silicon spray/cloth and put them away. I do that with all of my guns and I don't own a gun with rust or bad bluing. If I had to baby the gun after getting it CCH'd, I wouldn't do it to begin with. I like to use my guns, not just look at them.

If you engrave after color case hardening you may loose alot of the colors and hardening with the engraving. Color case hardening done correctly is really sharp looking. My CPA shillouette model is a tiger stripe in the CCH pattern its eye catching. The Hepburn and sharps are also nice looking but no real Pattern to the CCH like the cpa. A light coat of quality gun oil is all they get and colors are staying solid and bright so far. Light silcone or wax coat would work also. What rifle are you going to have CCH? Remember the more area flat the better is shows, think of the big flat reciever sides on a winchester or marlin lever gun. I have thought about sending my number 1 to Turnball for the action to be color case hardened.

You do have to take a few precautions with a CCH firearm. After Turnbull CCH's your frame there is a substance applied - lacquer like, to keep the colors vibrant, so stay away from petroleum/alcohol based gun oils that contain solvents, as they will strip away the lacquer, causing the colors to fade/become dull from the solvent. Oils such as Rem Oil and G-96 gun treatment are safe to use on CCH frames.

Turnbull got carried away with the High Wall. When I picked it up they had CCHd the bases, rings, and even the swivel studs? I forgot the gunsmith's name who did the gun, but he said he thought it would look a lot nicer with everything done. I have to agree with him. It was a really nice touch. Turnbull is a great place to do business with. I can't say enough good things about them. I bought rifles off of Doug's father years ago when they owned Creekside Guns and they were really good people. Doug's no exception. That apple didn't fall far from the tree!

Army & Navy Cooperative Society rook rifle relined to .32 S&W Long by John Taylor and metal restored by Lucas Geiger

This is what it looked like after relining, but before metal and wood restoration.

I have several shotguns with CCH receivers and I use a clear laquer applied by brush (one or two coats) to protect the CCH finish, which is microns thin, from wear. Dumb and lazy, I purchased the laquer from CT Shotgun, no doubt at vast mark-up. But I have done five or so guns using less than half a bottle at under $20, so I don't beat myself up over it.

I prefer the colors to be the light grey tending toward the light blue.
I sure do wish these revolvers were still available. Haven't seen them around for some time now

Not hard to take care of and I shoot them all quite a bit.

Jevyod, get your engraving done BEFORE you do the case hardening, I'm sure your engraver will bless you for doing it in that order.

My pics don't do the colors justice but I won't mix engraving and CCH on the same surface. I prefer engraving on blue but nickle makes a showier gun. I have a few old guns with faded CCH, still makes for a handsome gun.

So why wont you mix CCH and engraving? Do you feel that the one detracts from the other? I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder...I think together they look rather stunning!!(unlike me!!![smilie=s:)

I feel they do detract from each other, I think the engraving is easier to see and enjoy on a monochromatic background and I like the way CCH looks on a smooth surface...but that's just me.
