James,
The Lyman Reloading manual shows the 1889 as a Group 2 rifle and has smokeless loads listed for it. By comparison, the Winchester '73, and Marlin 1888 are listed as Group 1, or weaker rifles. A friend has the same rifle in .38-40 and only shoots smokeless loads. He uses large pistol primers.

For the part, you might try

Take it right there in Rapid to Jack First gunshop, they can probably fix you right up.

James,

Just FYI, I have a Marlin '89 in 38-40 and I load it with smokeless. I don't particularly load it hot but I use smokeless to give about original velocity with actually a heavier boolit. Regards, Woody

I love the .38/40 It is one of my favorite "old" rounds in lever action and revolvers..
If the bore is good you sound be able to get superb accuracy for that rifle.

Great rifle! I scored a beauty a few years ago. Perfect bore and perfect operation......I shoot both BP and light loads of smokeless.
