today i ordered 200 bullets from moyers cast bullets. they are .459" and 405gr for the 45-70 handi-rifle. my question is what loads should i use? i'm guessing that it will go from 1200-1500fps(i know, i'm a wusshttp://www.marlinowners.com/forum/images/smilies/new/biggrin.gif), and i have h4198, rel 7, varget, benchmark, and h322 on hand. it will be a deer and black bear load to 100-125yards(50 yards is the best guess). i also have trail boss(goes about 900-1000fps) but i figure that will be nonkick loads. i hope to have sr-4759 but i can wait for it.

i really wish that the 405gr moyers comes thru the accuracy department. 2 1/2 - 3" at 100 yards should do it. as you can see, a 3" circle is good enough for me. my little 20 vartarg goes .2" at 100 yards, mmmmmmm that two loads for h4198(20vt and 444 marlin).

any comments, answers, or questions will be helpful!!!

My .45-70 Handi needed .461 boolits to shoot accurately. I use the Lee .459/405HB boolit mould and a 40-to 1 lead tin alloy, sized to .461. YMMV. 23-25 grains of SR4759 is just right. 28-30 grains of IMR 4198/Rx7 works too. I put a 3/4 pound cylinder of lead in my Handi Butt stock to help with the recoil. Big improvement! I get 2 moa out to 250 yards which is as far as I can shoot here.

See: http://www.hodgdonreloading.com/

Look in the Trapdoor section. They got 1251 - 1459 fps with a 405 grain cast bullet and H4198, from a 24 inch barrel.

tailor the hand loads to the purpose of the gun. sane trap door loads will get the job done on any north american critter. lotsa choices with smokeless powder, but most of the smokeless target/silhouette folks shooting the .45-70 are typically using the more bulky aa5744 powder. heavy lead at slow speeds rule. cast boolits with flat (not beveled) bases are best, and do add a base protecting thin wad. my go-to smokeless 200yd .45-70 rolling block and sharps load is 26 grains of aa5744 under a lyman 457193 flat nosed boolit that drops at 415 grains using 1:20 roto-metal alloy. not sized and any good black powder lube will work fine, either dip or pan lubed (cookie cutter style). brass is either starline or ww, standard large rifle primer (federal). refer to lyman #49 or their cast boolit manual for more recipes ....
