What would you do to get it out?

Use a bronze bore brush the right size..

A .410 shotgun more brush with Kroil does a great job.

My favorite method is some copper scrubbing pad wrapped around an old brush. It will remove lead quickly and safely. Gives you something to do with worn out bore brushes. Works on revolvers, pistols, rifles, and shotguns. In shotguns it will remove plastic wad fouling too. A box is less than $3.00 around here and lasts a long time. Just make sure it is copper, not plated steel. A reliable brand is Chore Boy. If in doubt check it with a magnet.

A bronze bore brush with a wrap or two of 0000 steel wool dosed in Kroil will make short work of it. No, the steel wool won't damage or scratch the inside of your barrel.

I paid $1528 out the door this morning.

I got one much like it at the same place 2 years ago for $771 out the door, but it is 38-40.

This is the same cartridge, necked down from 0.429 to 0.400" bullet.

I feel like the 44 costs twice what the 40 costs.

That's still a good deal & the 38-40 was a steal

I use Tetra bore cleaner that is in a squeeze bottle and comes out in a gel form. It is for copper and lead fouling and smells like ammonia. I just bought a 50 year old savage 99 that had never been cleaned really well. I turn it upside down with the action opened to keep the cleaner out of the receiver and bolt, and stuff a clean rag in it. I then swab a generous amount of the cleaner in the barrel and let it sit for 20 minutes. After that I run a bronze bore brush through it 5 or 6 times on a non-scratching cleaning rod. Then a clean swab from the breech to the muzzle with a Otis pull through "rod". Then repeat until no more gray gunk comes out. Mine also had copper fouling and came out blue/green as well. It took about 6 tries before I got a clean enough patch.

Nice rifle! I just use Hoppe's and a good brush but I've never had a real serious lead fouling issue before. Hard to say how bad it is until you get started.

That's right about the relative price tags on the 44-40s (43 cal) vs the 38-40s (40 cal). :)

Depends on the amount of lead but either bronze or steel wool wrapped tightly around a worn out bore brush to a tight fit in the bore along with some Hoppes or Kroil will usually get the lead out. The Lewis Lead Remover also works well.

Sometimes just good soaking in Hoppes or Kroil over night then a very tight jagged cloth patch will get it out.

All good ideas! After you scrub the barrel the best you can, "I" would look into shooting several rounds of paper patched cast bullets. I know many will say not, but I know, for a fact, that I've seen paper-patching work in my 303 Enfield. The wood pulp in the paper polishes the bore when muscle and solvent won't. You'll be surprised at the results. Just my .02 worth.

a properly fit cast boolit will clean the lead out for you with no muss or fuss.
you will have to of course figure out how to make the boolit go down the barrel.

all great ideas and thoughts that I have done in the past as well ... however ...

get a can of "pure gum turpentine" to begin the slickest way I have found. now take you a lose patch and soak it in the terp. slather it up n down till the barrel is drippin wet and allow to set for 15 min. now take a tight patch and run thru in 1 direction and remove the tight patch and observe the shiney slivers of lead on it. soak that barrel again and repeat till all the lead is gone ... easy peasy.

before cleaning...............................while cleaning......................................afte r cleaning

I put in ~ 10 minutes of effort with Witch's Brew, a bronzer brush, and then patches on a jag.
I think that solvent is something like Kroil mixed with Flitz.
