View Full Version : Any other choices for a 32 acp mold than lyman?

Im looking for a 32 acp mold to use with my secamp and Walther PP.... Noticed I had about 300 cases the other day and I haven't shot either pistol in years due to ammo availability.

I'll get a lyman mold - 311252 or 313249 if I have to, but I'd really like a HP mold if anyone here can recommend one.

Thanks?

I use the Accurate 31-087T cast from air-cooled wheelweights with 2 grains of Bullseye in my Colt M1903 Pocket Model, two Walther PPs and a Beretta 3032 Tomcat.

I quench the same bullet to load for my CZ52 chambered for 7.62x25mm, which gives better accuracy than PPU ball at 1420 fps with 5.5 grains of Bullseye.

With 2 grains of Bullseye at a cartridge OAL of 0.96" velocity is 790 fps from the 2.4" Beretta and 905 fps from the 3.9" Walther PP. Do not seat shorter than 0.95". Longer, up to 0.98" is OK if it will chamber and feed in YOUR pistol.

I would not waste your time with a HP mold in the .32 ACP because you cannot drive the bullets fast enough to get any expansion unless you use very soft alloy not over 10BHN, and then only with the heavier loads in a barrel longer than 3.5" and it will upset a little.

Your best bet is to use as heavy bullet as is accurate, with flat nose which gives the greatest penetration and better crush than FMJ hardball. Accurate also has a 77-grain flatnosed bullet of shape similar to the Buffalo Bore if your pistol will feed it. I wanted a heavier bullet for dual-use in the 7.62x25 and .32 ACP with a smoother profile which would feed reliably.

The Buffalo Bore 75-grain is the best factory load you can hope for in a short-barrel .32 ACP and you can approximate its performance with 5.5 grains of #2400 in a strong steel-framed pistol:

"If you are looking for penetration from the .32 ACP, this round has it in spades. Seriously, a full inch of denim and it still had enough uumph to plow though the SIM-TEST block 14.5" before escaping out the side of the block. I've never been a big fan of FMJ or cast lead solids, but this test was a real eye opener on the penetration capabilities of a skinny .309" bullet running a shade over 900 fps. - See more at: http://mousegunaddict.blogspot.com/2012/06/buffalo-bore-32-acp-75-grain-hcfn.html#sthash.lHCt9vn3.dpuf"

Thanks Outpost! I run into OAL issues with the secamp - its only designed to feed the Winchester silver tip which has a shorter OAL. I used to just seat factory Winchester FMJ loads a little deeper to get them to feed. I guess what Im getting at is Im wondering if a heavier PB boolit might be too much for the secamp. Im sure the walther would be fine. I haven't shot my cz-52 for years but still have a decent stock of commie ammo I bought when it was cheap so that's not an immediate concern.

Deep seating bullets to get rounds to feed can dangerously increase presssure in a small case like the .32 ACP.

The Accurate 31-075R bullet is a close copy of the bullet used by Buffalo Bore and is a better choice for your Secamp pistol if you must stick to a shorter cartridge overall length:

These groups are with the 70-grain Ranch Dog bullet which is no longer available, but the 75-grain Accurate is almost identical and I prefer a bit extra bullet weight for more reliable recoil impulse for cycling.

I also use the Ranch Dog bullet in .32 ACP. It is a winner and as said above that Accurate design is real close. The most likely source for a HP mold is to send it off to Eric at hollowpointmolds.com, but I don't think the HP is useful in the .32 ACP.

I spent about an hour on accurate's site....Crack for a caster! Im looking at a 4 cavity mold 1/2 the 75 grainer and 1/2 87 grainer...best of both worlds! Then its just the debate of sending it off to Eric - I have a few of his molds and they cast great! Im not really sure how much a hollow point really matters in a 32....but it would be cool to have a multi bullet 1/2 HP mold to taunt my shooting buddy with! I just have my secamp from before I got my Kahr PM-9 which is a much better carry piece for unsocial encounters. The PP we shoot just because its cool, but it only fights steel targets and the occasional paper zombie.

The 82-grain HP version, conical cavity 0.6 diameter of the meplat with a 15 degree draft angle is the BOMB in the CZ52! This is a #3118 Ideal which Erik modified, shortening and hollowpointing for me.

MP 32ACP on the left, Ranch dog 314-75 on the right.

You might also check with Miha Previc and see if he has one of his 32 ACP 75 grain Hollow point molds. I have that and the RD mold and consider my 32 ACP needs totally met.
I have no use for the heavier boolits in this caliber (32 ACP). IME the extra weight causes a severe divergence between POA and POI, especially in the smaller guns like your Seecamp.

You can save a fist-full of money by getting a Lee 311-100-2R mold. Take that mold to your local machine shop and ask them to deck off the bottom driving band and lube groove. The resulting cavities will produce boolits in the 78 grain range. The RN profile of these boolits feed the best of any cast boolit I have tried in the 32acp, and I've been through quite a few of them. As for hollow pointing the mold, perhaps Erik or Buckshot would do that for you. I have not considered the HP option as function and reliability are my greater interests. Good luck with your project.

I have the Accurate 31-077T and love it, great boolits for my Kel-Tec.

Another good option! I have a milling table set up on my drill press for little projects just like this! Thanks!
