Ruger American Compact

I am blessed with two wonderful grandchildren. A boy and a girl. They are both left handed and will wear papa out reloading 10/22 magazines. I would like to buy each one of them a Ruger American Compact Left Hand .243 Rifle...however, it looks like Ruger only offers the LH American in the full size version only. Is this correct ? If so, I am faced with shortening the stock and barrel to carbine length. Does anyone have experience shortening the American stock ? Please share any tips.
