Ken Waters lists a .30-30 combination in his "Pet Loads" anthology for your powder using Ohaus 30170F, a 167gr. gas-check design.

167gr. 30170F; 18.0gr. IMR-4198; 1604fps

He also lists Lyman 160gr. 311291, another GC bullet:

160gr. 311291; 22.0gr. IMR-4198; 1868fps in 20" Bbl.; Accurate

I can't tell you difference in burning rate between IMR and H-4198, but I suspect if you dropped 1 grain from a published starting load, you would be safe with either one.

I would suggest starting at 14 grs. That load has shot well for me with plain based bullets.

CPT Lewis--

Welcome to the board, sir!

The gas check is a copper-colored gilding metal base item that is crimped or pressed onto the boolit's base shank, which is typically reduced in diameter to accomodate this addition. No copper base element = no gas check.

If the boolits are plain-based, it is best to limit pressures and their resulting velocities to about 1400 FPS or under in rifle barrels. This is not a hard-and-fast rule, but almost all of my rifle boolits are gas-check designs.

My rifles LOVE 18.0 gr IMR 4198 and the Lyman 311041 bullet. The book shows 18gr. as the starting load and they clock 1595 fps in my Marlin 336A 24: barrel.
I have come to expect groups like this at 50yd. with the peep sighted rifles.

I use a Lee push through sizer (polished out to.3095) to size and seat checks and lube in my Saeco press with alox in a .310 die. I cast with WW+ 2% tin. Have fun!
The Lyman manual has the best cast bullet data. Also the Lee book has a bunch.

if they are not g-check just use 10 gr unique like everybody else

Captain Lewis,
It was IMR4198. I have also used that load with H4198 with good results.

For the best accuracy, I raise the muzzle to position the powder to the back of the case before firing. I do not completely close the action until the muzzle is pointing in the direction of the target.

Chuck,
Nice shooting!

runfiverun,
For me, 10 grs. of Unique is a bit much with plain based bullets in the .30-30. Over 8 grs. and I get throat leading. 7grs. Unique with a 150 gr. plain based bullet shoots very well.
