I'm considering trying some surplus powder in my 35 whelen and have done quite a bit of research on the subject recently via the search funtion (tons of information there) and a couple of pm's.
The price is certainly right. Still have a question about it though.

Just wondering if there is an ingredient or lack of one in surplus wc860, 870 or872 that makes it corrosive to a bbl. that is not cleaned immediately when shooting lube and cast boolits. For instance if leaving the bbl. fouled for hunting for short periods?

In short, no. I use WC860 in great quantity and have completely satisfactory results with it, especially with cast bullets.

none of it is corrosive. At least none ive ever seen sold. 860 is just a slightly faster batch of the exact same powder as hogdon 870

35 shooter--What surplus powder(s) in the 4064,4350 range, that excels in the .35 Whelen, do you plan on trying?

Lol i'm not too sure about how it will excell as i get great accuracy in my rifle with imr4350.
I have both a plain base and gc version of the 358009 boolit.
I shoot the plain base behind 12 gr. of unique for what i think is 1300 to 1350 fps(haven't chronoed yet). That load will shoot 5 shots into an inch or less @ 100 yds. It's the most accurate load i have so far, but would like to bump the speed up a bit.
I've tried different powders and haven't been able to do it.
It seems the wc870 and 872 loads to aa8700 data from what i have found and i have accurate powder's data for 3100 and 8700.
My idea with the surplus was to use a slow burning powder to maybe bump the plain base up in speed a bit? Kind of a softer, slower send off kind of thing, keep pressures down and keep it from stripping the lands?
It seems from the aa8700 data, the surplus would be pretty much filling the case. The data i have on aa8700 shows from 1460 to 1660 fps. with pretty much a full case of it.
