As the title states, a type 99 followed me home today. She's ugly and missing the bolt but, she has the mum intact and excellent bore.
Picked it up for $100, I didn't think I did too bad until I looked at the prices for a complete bolt! :holysheep
Over all I'm pretty darn happy! Pictures coming, it's late and I can't get any decent light in the battle room (loading / gun room)

Funny there is a Marlin Lever in 45-70 that whimpers every time I see it in the rack in the gun shop. It too might follow me home someday soon.

Looking forward to the pics of your 99.

I'd definitely have that marlin follow me home. I know everyone needs a good 45/70 lever gun

A lot of those had chromed bores, so that may be why it looks good. Mine is
quite accurate with handloads.

Good luck finding a bolt, that might not be the easiest thing to find.

Definitely a chrome lined bore, I'm glad it has it too! Wish more milsurp had chrome lined bores.
Finding a bolt is going to be a challenge but I can't complain. Worst case scenario is I have a neat wall hanger

Awesome looking rifle. If 06ackley's deal doesn't work for you check out some of the Arisaka stuff at Liberty Tree Collectors. They have been a good help to me over the years with little projects.

Here is there link for bolt bodies:

Good luck and keep us posted on the results.

COOL! Good to see an old milsurp made whole again. Hope the Japs held as consistent
tolerances as the Germans did, most Mausers of the same batch will interchange bolts
safely, as many countries apparently didn't even worry - many Chilean Mausers have mismatched
bolts with every other part matching numbers, I have to assume it occurred while in service
in the Chilean military because they knew it was OK.

My dad told me during the war they would pick up the japs weapon. Put them in a big pile and if anyone wanted one just take one. He said went you got on the boat they would take the bolt out of the rifle for safety. that why you see a lot of mismatch jap rifles. He told me the big prize was the swords and higher rank officers pistol. He said most GI thought the guns were jap junk. Now find a type 99 with aircraft sight dust cover mono pod their bring good money now. Even jap bayonets are going up in value. I wish my dad would have brought back more junk. Two rifle and two swords, I wish he would got more. My dad use to let us play with the swords cutting wood, How dumb kids are.

Looks like I'll be getting the bolt from 06 Akley. Should be an interesting rifle for sure!

The guy who sold it to me told me it was his grandfather's war bring back but they didn't let him bring back the bolt. Sounds a little off to me but, what do I know!

bouncer50 - my uncle, who was ship's doctor on the U.S.S. Cimarron, brought home a nice Japanese officer's sword. When I asked him once how he came by it . .. he said it was actually a pretty simple "trade". He got it off of a Marine who needed a tube of tooth paste more than he needed the sword.

I find that to be an appealing rifle. Old and been through the war.

A funny thing happens when I open a photo link - when I close the link I don't get the post messages back! Anyone else have that? Anyway, Here is how one can copy from Photobucket. Left click on the bottom box (the one highlighted) then right click it and select copy then simply paste it into the reply.

The above example then looks like this;
URL=http://s388.photobucket.com/user/303Guy/media/CopytoCastBoolits_zpse0b82e92.jpg.html][IMG]http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/oo327/303Guy/CopytoCastBoolits_zpse0b82e92.jpg[/IMG

I had to take out some square parentheses to make it look like that or it just makes the image.

Hope that is useful.

What are those "wings" for on the rear sight? Windage:smile:

Cartridges of the World says it is a .311 boolite. I just got Accurate Mold to make be a knock off of the 200 grain 314299 in .315 dia. I plan on sizing to .314 for my Mosin. After you slug your bore something along this road might be a good choice. Maybe even a 185 grain Lee at .312 dia plus.

Nice find, the monopod alone is worth what you paid for the rifle. Don't worry too much about having a mismatched bolt serial number it was common with the post war bring backs. At least you have an unground mum and airplane sights. The sling swivel should be easy to find, they show up on e-bay and gunbroker a lot. RCBS still makes dies in 7.7 Jap and just about any of the 30-06 family of brass can be resized to fit. The easiest is 8x57 Mauser which doesn't need any trimming, in fact it comes up just a little short but after 1 or 2 reloads the brass will stretch out enough. Model 99's tend to have a generous chamber so expect to see a little case bulging with higher loads even with 7.7 Jap brass.
Both my 99's slug at .313 or better and I've been shooting a 100 grain .312 boolit out of them but am not getting the accuracy a fatter boolit could give. The 99's have medford rifling and need as fat a boolit as can be chambered to grab the rifling. Can't recommend a mold but something that drops a .314 slug or larger would be a start. Happy shooting, great to see another 99 saved.

You line up the peep to the cockpit and line up the wings to the aircraft wings the practice shooting in groups to bring down planes. I worth putting the rifle bolt back in. Your is a early model from about 1939 to 1941 Check ebay for jap parts you could made good more to part it out if you wanted to. Me i would put it back to it old glory.

The one I had shot fine with .308 coated bullets and I fed it the same .311 boolits I fed all of my 30 cals.
Hope you are as lucky.

You are pretty lucky to get that rifle for a C-bill, the jap rifles tanked near the end of the war, but yours is an early example. from what I can tell, it's probably a first series T99 short, built at nagoya arsenal. It is worth putting back to its original state, these are nice rifles. did you get a bayonet with it?

Also, production #'s and character translations.

I have 3 of these and they are have bores around .313" to .314". As posted earlier the monopod is worth more than you paid for the rifle.
Don't worry about the mismatched bolt too much. Just fireform the brass with about 13grs of Unique, fill with Cream of Wheat cereal, wax plug to keep it in and fire it. I use 8X57 brass as it is as easy to use a factory brass in 7.7.
Lee makes a 7.7 Jap die set but all of their seating dies for over a year do not crimp. If you have to remove the bell from the case you will need another die for this. I told Andy Lee this is not right but he thinks the FCD is just great. This does not come with the Lee die set either.
Mine shoot very well with either the 314299 from Lyman or the AK/SKS boolit from Lee. I use SR4759, either 18 or 19grs depending on the rifle.

Does look like you may want to do some work on the barrel crown? Could be just the photo.

Wayne Smith
01-11-2015, 03:32 PM
The base of the Jap. 7.7 shell is a couple thousands larger than the -06 or 8mm. This is not a problem, the brass will fireform. Simply put a ring of scotch tape around the case just above the rim so that it will be centered in the chamber and fireform round. You can put a full load in with a boolit to fireform, you don't have to use a light load. The 8mm will have to be necked down.

Eddie2002
01-11-2015, 08:56 PM
Muskyhunter, it's metford rifling, hit the wrong key thanks to my 10 month old puppy. The 7.7 Jap is a great brush gun for hunting with the short stock and 26 inch barrel. Dropped plenty of deer back in the 80's when I hunted with one of mine.

Magana559
01-12-2015, 06:38 AM
Leadman, I also noticed the crown when I first took that picture. I do believe it's part of the chrome lined barrel because I couldn't see any unevenness on the crown.
How much is an original monopod going for nowdays? I'm not going to pull it off or anything but, as noted you aren't the first to state that.

I'm going to put some dies on order next month due to the lack of funds. I sure can't wait to make some cases and load it with some boolits!

Looks like I also need to buy a new mold, I have a few Mosin with .313 bores and a few Enfields with .315 bores. So with all that said, is there a mold that fits the ticket?

My father brought one of those back from WW-II. It had the intact mum and was in really good shape (no rust, good bluing, good wood). He had it sporterized and it ended up being my deer hunting rifle when I was a kid. At that time, commercial ammo for it manufactured my Norma was readily available.

I have one of these, believe it or not it is supposed to be unfired! Long story here: Fellow was a sailor on the USS Columbus tied up outboard of the USS Missouri when the treaty was signed ending WWII. He said they were later 'drafted' into working parties loading munitions onto barges and hauling the stuff out beyond 50 fathoms (300 feet) and dumping it overboard. He got to pick out a rifle and bayonette for a souvenir and the Navy issued him a safe pass to bring it back. His wife told him she wanted it gone when they moved to GA and as he knew I collected firearms he asked me if I wanted it. I have the rifle and the bayonnette but he was never able to find the pass documentation. All the S/N's match but the mum has been ground - it even has the sliding dust cover intact! And the bayonnette has never been sharpened.

Navyvet, ammo is still pretty easy to find but it's quite expensive to me.
Now I need to know, how was the accuracy on yours? How about recoil? I'm not recoil shy at all. My favorite rifle to shoot at the moment is a 45-70 with a good load of H4198.

Muskyhunter, I must not be paying much attention! I have a few Lee molds I might give it a try with. Heck I might just buy a proper sized NOE mold as the lyman usually cast undersized for me.

Magana559

That's a great story trapper! Good to see its in good hands now, even with the mum ground off its still an important part of history. I hate to say it but, I wouldn't take long to fire that unfired rifle! It was built to shoot (at americans!) So I would definitely shoot it! (At paper!)

It's been close to 40 years since I shot it, so the memory is a bit fuzzy. I remember it having more recoil than a .30-30, but even as young teenager, I didn't think the recoil was unreasonable. Even with the steel buttplate, I didn't think it was that bad. The accuracy was good enough for the deer hunting that I was doing -- iron sights only, heavy brush (except on the pipeline clearings).

Would you like a type 99? A friend noted my post and sent me the following info, thought I would share it here.

128269
"GUNS GO OVERBOARD"Japanese small arms and rifles are heaped into an LSM to be borne out to sea off Saishu Island, Japan, where they were dumped into the ocean. The very first task of American occupying forces was to disarm the enemy and render all fighting equipment harmless.

As I said Mold Lyman 314299 or the Lee 312-185R.

The Lee 312-185R has worked very well for me in 85.7% of the Type 99's I've used it in. The one rifle has a max sized bore and didn't shoot it well-a 4" group at 100 yards.

My dad told me after the battle of a island they would find any Jap boat that still floats load it with weapon, ammo etc. They would tow the boat out to sea and use it for target practice. Plane would bomb it, Or they used the 16 inch ship guns.
