22 Ammo

Hallelujah! Walmart had some 22 shells. They had the standard sign up on the counter that said "We have no 22 shells". Well I went to see what they did have in the way of other ammo. Low and behold they had 5, 50 round boxes of Remington Thunderbolts $2.37 each, and 3, 50 round boxes of Remington Golden bullets $3.49 each. A sign on the locked cabinet said "Only one box of bulk ammo per person". Well they held that quote to the 50 round boxes also. My self and two other guys bought one box each of the Thunderbolts. I guess you buy what you can get. With tax they were $2.56 each, that's a hair over 5 cents for each boolit. The last time I bought 22 shells they were less than half that. One more thing, that was the first time in 2 years that I have seen 22 shells in Walmart.

Midwayusa.com sent me a notice 22s instock. I half heartedly clicked expecting them to be sold out. I was able to purchase two bricks. But damn those bricks were high dollar. Two bricks to my front door 98.00. Way to much I think. But when you're out... The sad thing they were neither quite or stingers. But the take away... I got some good quality 22s

Oct. of '12 since I found any Federal bulk packs there. I still make the trek in hopes though.

Remington Thunderbolts and Golden Bullets are a slight step up from no ammo at all. I emphasize slight. Given my druthers, I'd rather shoot almost anything else.

35remington, I've never had any problems shooting them in my Mark II Ruger, they shoot just as well as any Winchester, or Federals, I've shot. This is not a rebuttal, I just can't afford Target ammo. What brands do you shoot? The other two guys that bought a box each didn't seem to mind that they were Remington. I am puzzled though, what is the problem with them?

45-70, I've had no problem with the Remington GBs either. Most of mine is old stock from before the craziness; so I can't speak to any problems (if any) with new stock.

It's been a looong time since I saw any 22 ammo in Walmart. I don't go there much, but I do look when I'm there. My local WM doesn't carry CCI Stand Vel anyway, so I don't sweat it much. I still have 6 or 8 hundred around, but I haven't shot my 22's in a while, either. Mike

I pulled the bullets out of the duds, some had no primer compound, some no powder. I would say 3 to 5 out of 100 did not fire. All of my old stock ammo I tried fired with no problems. Some of these were the same brand and type.
When I used to hunt all the time with this rifle from about 1975 on the Remington ammo gave me no problems and I shot mostly the Golden rounds. Was accurate then also, not anymore.

I'm down to under 10k rounds, but I gave a grandson 1500 last year. I let the grandkids here shoot all they want. I do need more .22 mag. though.

I love using the kinetic hammer on all kinds of rounds. Never done a 22LR yet. Why is this is bad idea?

Likewise. I would buy back when it was available. I'm still shooting .22 though.

Looks like the days of taking a .22 out and shooting up most of a brick in a day is a bygone thing for the forseeable future. DANG! I HATE it when that happens!!!

Thunderbolt quality is not the same as 1970s1980s. That stuff always worked in anything I shot it in. Bought a brick a few years ago and had all kinds of non-firing drama with them in several good quality firearms. When I see them in the ammo cage all I think is "damn still no 22's"
Which reminds me I saw a license plate yesterday. <<MISS22S>> thought that was amusing.

That's EXACTLY what I think when I see Remington .22's. Quality control is poor, misfires in abundance, velocity variation way higher than it should be, accuracy worse than nearly anything else. Some of the very worst .22's made currently.

I shoot CCI's when I can find them. Never had a misfire yet. Fortunately I laid in a very good supply of Subsonic HP's and Mini Mag HP, as well as 22 magnum and .17 ammo well before the panic. I'm still shooting and hunting with .22's. The hunting part is as much as I want. The plinking and practice part is more sparing, with some to most of the slack taken up by such loads as 25-20's and 30's loaded with lightweight cast bullets and W231, Bullseye, etc.

And yeah, I have a lot of pistol powder too, most especially Red Dot and Promo (28#'s) and have worked up very suitable circa 1000 fps loads with that powder as well. I prefer Bullseye, but Red Dot does right well too.
