A friend of mine calls me yesterday and asked " what is a 1960 Marlin lever action 30-30 with a scope worth?"
I told him that in good condition 4-5 hundred would be fair price.
He tells me that the guy was in the military stationed in Japan and bought in the PX in 1960 for $49 and the guy wants $100 for and would I pay that for it I TOLD HIM EVERYDAY AND TWICE ON SUNDAYS.
I go by to check out his new purchase and it is a nice clean rifle with a monoscope 6x32 scope with the original leather covers and he has the tag that was hanging on the rifle that says marlin 336 Texan he also has a box of ammo with a price tag of $3.29 with 18 fired and 2 unfired and he told my friend that that was all the ammo that had been fired through the rifle did not have my bore light but the bore looked really nice by what I could see with a flashlight.

I offered to triple his money on the spot but he would not let it go I thought I stole my 35 rem for 200 but this was unreal Nice purchase though

Had they started the Micro Groove thing by 1960?

I never get deals like that. Think I'd have to let the seller know what it's truly worth and make a compromise.

If the seller is of sound mind and is setting the price, well, I see nothing wrong done.

If seller is a friend and asks how much it was worth and I told them $100, well, that's lying and stealing IMHO.

Id probably feel guilty for buying at $100 if the seller didn't know any better and would do the right thing and let them know and find a compromise somewhere. But if both parties are happy with the transaction, no harm no foul.

I agree, fellow who sold it is up in his 70s and a military vet. I couldn't rob him.

I would probably have give him more money than he was asking for but it was not my purchase and did not want to get in the middle of it with my friend that bought it. I told him the value of it when he asked and I have never met the seller so I have no insight there.

I tend toward this feeling as well, but it's really none of my business. I've seen 3 examples of those 336 Texans over the years, and all were fine little rifles. MG rifling wouldn't matter a whit to me.

The 30-30 WCF is enough rifle for 90% of the deer hunting done in North America. EVERY muley and whitetail I've ever shot could have been taken very humanely with the 30-30, and a few of them were.

Please, don't jump to conclusions about the original purchase.

It sounds to me like both seller and purchaser were partly ignorant of the gun's value. If the purchaser is keeping it for his use then both got what they wanted and neither was taken advantage of. If the seller was out to get the most he could, then a phone call to a gun shop would fix the problem. Just because someone is in their 70's and is a vet does not mean they are senile or stupid.

It's a private sale, sounds like there are some details we're not privy to. Sometimes a rifle needs a new home and the price isn't important.
