I went to the range yesterday and played with my Rem700 30-06. I was shooting some 168 grain bullets I got from a friend, they are either 311291's or a Lee knock off of that mold. They are about 13 BHN gas checked and lubed with a reddish lube. I tumbled them in LLA as they were just under .308 when I got them. I loaded them in old Military cases with cci primers and 35 1/2 grains of IMR 3o31. The first 3 shots went into a sub inch group. They were almost touching but ran fom 5oclock to 11 oclock The group was about 2" to the right, almost perfect elevation wise. I shot a few more and the snow started getting thick. I was surprised at the LOW recoil and accuracy of this bullet/load. As soon as they get finished working on the Long rifle range I've got to try them at 100 and 150 yards. I did not chrono them as I was expecting the snow. I was NOT sure of the accuracy either!!

I've found that the ol' 311291 (or it's clones) will shoot well in just about any .30 cal. In my McGowan-barreled M700 .308, it will almost (but not quite :( ) equal Sierra Matchkings out to 200yards; ditto FMJs my K-31 Swiss; and it looks like it's going to shoot much better than factory loads in the Savage 340 .30-30 I picked up a couple of months ago. (Won't know, for sure, 'til the weather breaks a bit and I can get back to range.)

In my '03 the 311299 GC with Roster Red and 17gr 2400 will hit the 8" steel at 200yd every time. Mv @ 1750 fps. I call it my bunny fart load. Fun shootin lead.

Ditto this but with a 314299 from the Krag and '03. I use Larsen's BAC lube

I have a Ruger 77 Ultra-light and a Rem 700 Mtn rifle, both in .30-06. One of my favorite loads for both is the Lyman 311291 and 34g of 3031. 1 to 2 inch groups at 100 yds is easy to obtain with this combo.

I ffigure I'm getting around 2000 to 2100 fps with this load. I would like to shoot a few ground hogs with it for grins. IF (big IF) that works out well I might use it for stand hunting deer!! I am not sure I'll be able to leave the 35 whelen home though [:<0
