I've spent the last two hours researching the history of the 336 as well as the '94 lever guns. The one thing I can't find is when did Marlin start putting safeties on the 336?? Anybody got any ideas?

I believe 1983 is the correct answer also.

I'm not really in the market but a buddy of mine down here in AZ just picked up a 1978 336 for $200 and I was doing some research for him on the gun. I wouldn't mind having one but $500 a pretty high price at least as far as I'm concerned.

Safety on the 336 doesn't bother me. If it did I know how to disable it with a simple rubber o-ring.

Last April I picked up a Henry H009B 30-30. One of the things that I immediately noticed is that there is NO safety on the thing and that surprised me. I would figure that an American made gun especially would absolutely have to have every little thing possible to protect us from ourselves. I know that the safety on my '94 Marlin bit me a week or so ago at the range and I don't even remember why I pushed the thing. I do remember benching down with iron sights on a 50 yard target, getting all pulled in for a nice shot for group when all I got was "CLICK". It was only after I'd unchambered the round and found no indent on the primer that the little light bulb went off over my head illuminating the safety I had pushed.

I vote when Marlin went downhill. I have never bought one with the safety button and I was a dealer for at least the last 20 yrs. No resale IMHO enough to make a profit. No wonder Marin got bought out.

The hammer block can be exchanged for a lanyard ring and solve two problems at once.
